Varietal Pinot Blanc

Pinot Blanc, a white grape variety with roots in Burgundy, showcases a distinct and versatile character, making it a fascinating exploration for wine enthusiasts. What makes Pinot Blanc unique is its ability to express a range of styles depending on the winemaking region. In Alsace, France, it produces full-bodied and aromatic wines with notes of orchard fruits and flowers, often with a touch of spice. In Germany and Austria, Pinot Blanc, known as Weissburgunder, yields crisp and refreshing wines with bright acidity. Pinot Blanc’s adaptability extends to regions like Italy, where it is known as Pinot Bianco, and across the New World. The grape’s moderate acidity and neutral profile make it an excellent canvas for winemakers to craft wines that range from easy-drinking and quaffable to more complex and age-worthy expressions. Exploring Pinot Blanc offers a delightful journey into a grape that combines familiarity with a spectrum of expressions, making it a versatile and enjoyable choice for diverse palates.

Country Italy

There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. Grapes were first being grown and cultivated on Italian soil several thousand years ago by the Greeks and the Pheonicians, who named Italy 'Oenotria' – the land of wines – so impressed were they with the climate and the suitability of the soil for wine production. Of course, it was the rise of the Roman Empire which had the most lasting influence on wine production in Italy, and their influence can still be felt today, as much of the riches of the empire came about through their enthusiasm for producing wines and exporting it to neighbouring countries. Since those times, a vast amount of Italian land has remained primarily for vine cultivation, and thousands of wineries can be found throughout the entire length and breadth of this beautiful country, drenched in Mediterranean sunshine and benefiting from the excellent fertile soils found there. Italy remains very much a 'land of wines', and one could not imagine this country, its landscape and culture, without it.

Region Trentino/Alto Adige

As the name suggests, the northern Italian wine region of Trentino-Alto Adige is made up of two separate areas, with Trento in the south, and the Adige river in the north. There are few parts of Italy quite as alluring for wine fans as Trentino-Alto Adige, as this is an area in which Italian wines become really quite unique and surprising. As the region is nestled in the foothills of the Italian Alps, it is quite a long way from the sun drenched islands of the south, or the rolling hillsides of central Italy. Indeed, the wines of Trentino-Alto Adige are packed full of fresh, vibrant alpine flavors and aromas, and are as influenced by the Germanic styles of wine making as they are influenced by those of the Italians, making the wines of this region really quite unusual, and utterly captivating. Wineries in Trentino-Alto Adige use both native and imported grape varietals for their wines, and they are generally considered to be amongst the finest in Italy.

Fruit selection for this wine casts a wider net in the celebrated Vorbeg vineyard that also fuels the exceptional Rarity bottling. This 52-hectare site has incredibly steep (70%) inclines at 450 to 650 meters above sea level with south and southwestern exposures. The 2022 Alto Adige Terlano Pinot Bianco Riserva Vorberg (with 60,000 bottles produced) is a creamy, mid-weight expression from a warm and dry vintage. The wine offers pretty aromatic highlights of melon, Golden Delicious apple, pie crust and crushed oystershell. This is a beautiful and more accessible taste of the best of Alto Adige.

Fairly neutral with vibrant apricot fruit, aromatic herbs and a touch of almonds. Tight and tense acidity on the medium-bodied palate, tingling and electric. The citrusy finish is long and salty. Drink or hold.

A masterclass in handling a warm vintage, with all the concentration and power you'd expect from 2022, but those steep Vorberg slopes kept enough freshness to make it sing. Ripe yellow apple, quince, and white peach mesh with notes of crushed stones and mountain herbs. Hints yeasted bread and roasted almonds show breadth and richness, but the wine carries Terlano's trademark ability to balance richness with mountain freshness. It lays down waves of fruit while maintaining a cool, mineral-driven core. The kind of white that prompts rethinking what Italian whites can be, especially in challenging years. Drink Now - 2045

The 2022 Pinot Bianco Riserva Vorberg is wildly fresh, with a cascade of dusty dried flowers, lemon oil, sweet herbs and white smoke. This is silken and elegant in feel with creamy weight suspended by vibrant acidity, as mineral-laced orchard fruits flow across the palate. It finishes long and staining, full of youthful tension, as the palate buzzes with a saline saturation and hints of sour citrus. The 2022 is just a baby today, but it has fantastic potential.

A fragrant white, with hints of preserved lemon, petrol and wild thyme lacing flavors of poached apricot and pear, plus a rich touch of toasted hazelnut and the tang of grapefruit sorbet. A crackling streak of salinity combines with stone and other mineral accents on the long, creamy finish. Drink now through 2035. 5,000 cases made, 700 cases imported.

Winery Notes

The multifaceted aroma of this wine derives from a combination of ripe fruit, including honeydew melon, white peach, pear and Golden Delicious apple, together with the aromas of quince jelly, camomile and pineapple, on the one hand, and mineral notes of flint on the other. The interplay of fruity aromatic and salty components is repeated on the palate. The compact structure and elegant creamy elements create a lingering, firmly minerally and spicy character on the aftertaste.
