Italian White Blend

Italian white blend wines exemplify the country's rich winemaking heritage, offering a diverse range of styles and flavors. What makes these blends unique is the meticulous interplay of indigenous grape varieties, each contributing distinctive characteristics to the final composition. Grapes like Trebbiano, Garganega, Vermentino, and Malvasia often feature in these blends, creating a harmonious fusion of floral, citrus, and tropical fruit notes. The versatility of Italian white blends is underscored by their regional diversity, from the crisp and mineral-driven whites of Friuli-Venezia Giulia to the fuller-bodied expressions of Sicily. These wines frequently exhibit a balance between acidity and texture, making them suitable for various occasions and culinary pairings. Italian white blends reflect a commitment to tradition while embracing innovation, offering a delightful exploration for wine enthusiasts. Whether enjoyed as a refreshing aperitif or paired with Mediterranean cuisine, these wines showcase Italy's vinous mosaic, inviting enthusiasts to savor the unique tapestry of flavors crafted from the country's indigenous white grape varieties.

Country

Italy

There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. Grapes were first being grown and cultivated on Italian soil several thousand years ago by the Greeks and the Pheonicians, who named Italy 'Oenotria' – the land of wines – so impressed were they with the climate and the suitability of the soil for wine production. Of course, it was the rise of the Roman Empire which had the most lasting influence on wine production in Italy, and their influence can still be felt today, as much of the riches of the empire came about through their enthusiasm for producing wines and exporting it to neighbouring countries. Since those times, a vast amount of Italian land has remained primarily for vine cultivation, and thousands of wineries can be found throughout the entire length and breadth of this beautiful country, drenched in Mediterranean sunshine and benefiting from the excellent fertile soils found there. Italy remains very much a 'land of wines', and one could not imagine this country, its landscape and culture, without it.

Region

Trentino/Alto Adige

As the name suggests, the northern Italian wine region of Trentino-Alto Adige is made up of two separate areas, with Trento in the south, and the Adige river in the north. There are few parts of Italy quite as alluring for wine fans as Trentino-Alto Adige, as this is an area in which Italian wines become really quite unique and surprising. As the region is nestled in the foothills of the Italian Alps, it is quite a long way from the sun drenched islands of the south, or the rolling hillsides of central Italy. Indeed, the wines of Trentino-Alto Adige are packed full of fresh, vibrant alpine flavors and aromas, and are as influenced by the Germanic styles of wine making as they are influenced by those of the Italians, making the wines of this region really quite unusual, and utterly captivating. Wineries in Trentino-Alto Adige use both native and imported grape varietals for their wines, and they are generally considered to be amongst the finest in Italy.

JS 94pts

James Suckling

Showing apricots, peaches and sage, this is layered and savory. On the palate, it’s vibrant and refined with silky texture, crisp acidity and a long finish. From organically and biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink now.

DC 93pts

Decanter

This wine is the classic mix of 60% Pinot Bianco, 30% Chardonnay and 10% Sauvignon Blanc. It sees mainly stainless steel, with around 20% aged on the fine lees in large oak. Broad and energetic, there's so much going on. The Sauvignon is up front but the lurking richness of the other two grapes back it up, especially the floral tones of the Pinot Bianco. Ripe, round and full, with lush, broad and surprisingly developed fruit flavours. Great length.

WA 92pts

Wine Advocate

With an ample 210,000 bottles made, this blend of 60% Pinot Bianco, 30% Chardonnay and 10% Sauvignon Blanc is a popular calling card for Cantina Terlano. The 2024 Alto Adige Terlaner Cuvée draws its fruit from steep slopes that capture the most sunlight hours. This blend has been produced for more than a century (since 1893). There is fragrant lift from the Sauvignon Blanc, but you also get mineral freshness and zest from the other two grapes. It offers a pretty silky texture for near-term drinking.

WS 92pts

Wine Spectator

A bright, graceful wine, with flavors of nectarine, yellow peach, orchard blossoms, lime pith and green almond, plus a touch of passion fruit coulis, dancing across the palate, all buoyed by mouthwatering acidity. Lasting and sleek on the finish, echoing mineral and spice accents. Pinot Bianco, Chardonnay and Sauvignon. Drink now through 2034. 17,500 cases made, 1,200 cases imported.

VM 91pts

Vinous Media

The 2024 Terlaner Cuvée is understated in the glass, wafting up with notes of sliced pear, white flowers and raw almonds. It balances zesty acidity with mineral-infused pit fruits and spice over a wave of silken textures. This echoes with inner florals as a subtle citrus twang adds dimension and a hint of green melon fades.

Winery Notes

Green apple and white peach combine with fine nuances of lemon balm and mint to create the typical aromas of the classic Terlano. Pronounced notes of peach on the palate, lending the wine its lively character. The multifaceted, well structured flavor derives from an interplay of freshness and minerality and also has a wonderfully long, persistent finish.
