Varietal

Sauvignon Blanc

The green skinned grapes of the Sauvignon Blanc varietal had their origins in Southern France, where they are still widely grown and used for many of the excellent young and aged white wines the region is famous for. Today, however, they are grown in almost every wine producing country in the world, and are widely revered for their fresh and grassy flavors, full of tropical notes and refreshing, zesty character. Sauvignon Blanc grapes thrive best in moderate climates, and ripen relatively early in the year. This has made them a favorite for many wineries in the New World, where they can still produce healthy and high yields in the earlier part of the summer before the temperatures become too hot. Too much heat has a massively adverse effect on Sauvignon Blanc, as the grapes become dull in their flavor, and the wine produced from them loses all its unique character and high points. As such, Sauvignon Blanc farmers have had a lot of trouble from global warming and climate change, as they are being forced to harvest their crops increasingly earlier in the year when it is cool enough to do so.

Country

Italy

There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. Grapes were first being grown and cultivated on Italian soil several thousand years ago by the Greeks and the Pheonicians, who named Italy 'Oenotria' – the land of wines – so impressed were they with the climate and the suitability of the soil for wine production. Of course, it was the rise of the Roman Empire which had the most lasting influence on wine production in Italy, and their influence can still be felt today, as much of the riches of the empire came about through their enthusiasm for producing wines and exporting it to neighbouring countries. Since those times, a vast amount of Italian land has remained primarily for vine cultivation, and thousands of wineries can be found throughout the entire length and breadth of this beautiful country, drenched in Mediterranean sunshine and benefiting from the excellent fertile soils found there. Italy remains very much a 'land of wines', and one could not imagine this country, its landscape and culture, without it.

Region

Trentino/Alto Adige

As the name suggests, the northern Italian wine region of Trentino-Alto Adige is made up of two separate areas, with Trento in the south, and the Adige river in the north. There are few parts of Italy quite as alluring for wine fans as Trentino-Alto Adige, as this is an area in which Italian wines become really quite unique and surprising. As the region is nestled in the foothills of the Italian Alps, it is quite a long way from the sun drenched islands of the south, or the rolling hillsides of central Italy. Indeed, the wines of Trentino-Alto Adige are packed full of fresh, vibrant alpine flavors and aromas, and are as influenced by the Germanic styles of wine making as they are influenced by those of the Italians, making the wines of this region really quite unusual, and utterly captivating. Wineries in Trentino-Alto Adige use both native and imported grape varietals for their wines, and they are generally considered to be amongst the finest in Italy.

JS 95pts

James Suckling

Restrained and mineral, this is focused on sage and gooseberries with lemon-pulp aromas and flavors. The medium-bodied palate is vibrant and zesty yet balanced by just enough weight. Polished finish. Drink or hold.

WE 95pts

Wine Enthusiast

If you think you know Sauvignon Blanc, this wine might flip your script. It's got that classic grapefruit and herbs thing going on, but then it goes somewhere entirely different. There's this wild smoky note that feels like early morning fog rolling over stone fruit orchards. The texture is what really gets you though - it's got weight but floats across your palate like morning mist. Not trying to be Loire or New Zealand, just confidently doing its own Alto Adige thing. Pure mountain energy in a bottle. Drink Now - 2045

Bursting with enthusiasm and zeal: complex guava, green apple and sweet green herbs leap out of the glass alongside the lime zest acidity and salty finish. (Gold) - DWWA 2025

Wine Advocate

The Cantina Terlano 2023 Alto Adige Terlano Sauvignon Quarz (with 55,000 bottles made) offers a slightly softer and less exuberant interpretation of the grape compared to the Winkl, which is all about brightness and primary fruit. The Quarz shows more depth and complexity thanks to a focus on fruit exclusively from steep vineyards (with 10% to 40% inclines at 300 to 550 meters in elevation). It sees a slow ferment with controlled temperatures, and it ages on the fine lees for nine months in a combination of large oak cask and stainless steel.

VM 94pts

Vinous Media

The 2023 Sauvignon Quarz is remarkably lifted and refined in this vintage, as crushed limes, young kiwis and mint are complicated by a whiff of flint. This is a model of purity, like drinking liquid rocks, with a stern mineral core and cooling acidity that propels its citrus-spiked orchard fruits. A pretty inner sweetness lingers, offset by a sour twang as hints of green melon fade, leaving a salty tinge and the palate salivating for more. This is a riveting expression of Quarz.

WS 93pts

Wine Spectator

An elegant Sauvignon Blanc, refreshing and mouthwatering without being overly lip-smacking. This integrates a streak of salinity with concentrated flavors of ripe pear, quince, persimmon, lime peel, fresh tarragon and white pepper. Long and fragrant on the finish. Drink now through 2035. 4,600 cases made, 175 cases imported.

Winery Notes

This Sauvignon is enticingly exotic in the glass, with multilayered fruit of mango, papaya, lime and red grapefruit, and herbal aromas reminiscent of lemon grass, lemon balm, mint and green tea. It also reveals mineral notes of flint combined with a hint of gooseberry. On the palate, the wine offers a fascinating interplay of juicy fruit aromas and delicate minerality creating a harmonious opulence with a long and impressive finish.
