There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. Grapes were first being grown and cultivated on Italian soil several thousand years ago by the Greeks and the Pheonicians, who named Italy 'Oenotria' – the land of wines – so impressed were they with the climate and the suitability of the soil for wine production. Of course, it was the rise of the Roman Empire which had the most lasting influence on wine production in Italy, and their influence can still be felt today, as much of the riches of the empire came about through their enthusiasm for producing wines and exporting it to neighbouring countries. Since those times, a vast amount of Italian land has remained primarily for vine cultivation, and thousands of wineries can be found throughout the entire length and breadth of this beautiful country, drenched in Mediterranean sunshine and benefiting from the excellent fertile soils found there. Italy remains very much a 'land of wines', and one could not imagine this country, its landscape and culture, without it.

Trentino/Alto Adige

As the name suggests, the northern Italian wine region of Trentino-Alto Adige is made up of two separate areas, with Trento in the south, and the Adige river in the north. There are few parts of Italy quite as alluring for wine fans as Trentino-Alto Adige, as this is an area in which Italian wines become really quite unique and surprising. As the region is nestled in the foothills of the Italian Alps, it is quite a long way from the sun drenched islands of the south, or the rolling hillsides of central Italy. Indeed, the wines of Trentino-Alto Adige are packed full of fresh, vibrant alpine flavors and aromas, and are as influenced by the Germanic styles of wine making as they are influenced by those of the Italians, making the wines of this region really quite unusual, and utterly captivating. Wineries in Trentino-Alto Adige use both native and imported grape varietals for their wines, and they are generally considered to be amongst the finest in Italy.

The Cantina Terlano 2020 Alto Adige Terlaner Grand Cuvée Primo is all about texture. This beautiful wine carries the unique signatures of oak and lees aging that impart delicate creaminess. There is plenty of plushness and softness here, all followed by white wine tannins. Its rich and viscous mouthfeel makes a perfect sounding board for lemon curd, crème caramel and the gelatin on a fruit tart. This blend of 70% Pinot Bianco, 28% Chardonnay and 2% Sauvignon Blanc ends with a hint of gardenia flower—like the kind ladies in Tahiti wear so elegantly in their hair. Only 4,000 bottles were made.

This is so beautiful, with candied apples, peach skins, honeysuckle and almond pastry. Hints of candied citrus and dried Mediterranean herbs, too. Full-bodied, so complex and focused. Impressive balance and polish, with a textural mouthfeel and a delicate phenolic sensation in the finish. Very long. Beautiful now, yet there's no doubt about its longevity.

The 2020 Terlaner Grande Cuvée Primo entrances with a delicate mix of dusty stone, freshly spiced pear, white flowers and crushed raw almonds. This is elegance personified, silky yet buoyant. Enriching hints of hazelnut custard enhance the notes of young peach as a staining of minerality amasses toward the close. The Primo finishes dramatically long yet youthfully tense, leaving a saturation of primary fruit to resonate beneath a flourish of citrus-tinged florals. The word "wow" does not do this justice. The 2020 is just a baby today. Is it Grande Cuvée or Grand Cru? Either way, it's fantastic.

Enticing aromas of ripe fruit and toast offer a preview to the lovely range of Canary melon, quince paste, lemon curd, chopped hazelnut and vanilla flavors layered in this succulent white. Shows cut and class, framed by vibrant acidity and a streak of salinity, with pretty hints of broom, grapefruit peel and saffron playing on the finish. Pinot Bianco, Chardonnay and Sauvignon. The wine's elegance and perfect balance are the product of its remarkable structure and subtle texture, which give the wine its unmistakable character. Its extremely long finish is more than pleasant; it leaves its mark in memory as the supreme expression of a mineral terroir that is unique in the world.
