The name of this grape, meaning 'blood of Jove' conjures up evocative images of long dead civilizations, and gives the Sangiovese varietal a sense of the holy, the sacred, the special. Indeed, this particular type of Italian grape has been cultivated and processed for thousands of years, and is said to be the original favorite grape varietal of the Romans, and the Etruscans before them. Throughout history, vintners have continued to plant this varietal, and they continue to produce wonderful wines to this day. The long bunches of very dark, round fruit are treasured by fine wineries in Italy and a few other places around the world, and when young, these grapes are lively â€“ full of strawberry flavors and a little spiciness. However, it is when they are aged in oak that they take on some truly special flavors and aromas, as seen in some of the finest wines of the Old World.

Showing dark concentration and depth, the Castello di Ama 2022 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigneto La Casuccia feels ripe and plump. The bouquet is packed with blackberry preserves and baked plum. There are hints of cinnamon and nutmeg, and the wine offers a somewhat chewy, velvety texture. This is mostly Sangiovese with Merlot in a supporting role. La Casuccia is a wine of intensity, volume and power, and you certainly feel that in this vintage. La Casuccia complements the other cru expressions such as Bellavista by offering a little more texture and volume.

The 2022 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Ama San Lorenzo is redolent of black cherry, plum, graphite, leather, incense, licorice and dried flowers. Ample and dense, the 2022 stains the palate with waves of dark fruit intermingled with salivating acids and beams of tannin. This full-bodied Gran Selezione has a ton to offer. I would give it a few years to settle, as it is quite imposing in the early going.
