The Castello di Bolgheri 2021 Bolgheri Superiore is a classic expression from the region and is a wine you can look upon as a measuring stick for vintage variation along the Tuscan Coast. The 2021 growing season is endowed with power, richness and density. There is harmony here, but the wine definitely leaves a bold impression that is marked with black fruit, toasted spice and campfire ember. The blend is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Merlot, and 35,000 bottles were made. The US retail price was supplied to me by the producer, but I can't help notice that it has doubled in two years.

The purity of blackcurrant and lavender is greatly appreciated. The palate is focused and very polished, with substance and an air of excellence. Medium body with integrated tannins and a light tomato-leaf and currant aftertaste. Drink after 2027.

The 2021 Castello Di Bolgheri is a dark purple/magenta color and is deep and musky on the nose with baked blackberries, plum skin, smoky cedar, toasted herbs, dark chocolate, and sappy earth. Full-bodied, it expands with fleshy tannins and even acidity that adds needed freshness to the wine. It’s a hearty wine that should hold up over the coming 15 or so years.
