Varietal

Red Bordeaux

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act – the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

The Wine Independent

The 2022 from La Serre is 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc, and it opens with a nose of currants, perfumed dark cherries, dried wild flowers and a touch of cedary, pencil-shaving spice. There follows a very harmonious palate, supple and driven, with a seductive and seamless texture from the outset, hiding a delicious core of finely grained tannins. It has a juicy freshness but is in no way light, with a fine texture of dark and savoury berry fruits, lovely tannic structure and a fresh, limestone-driven, acid drive. A delicious La Serre this year. The alcohol on the label is 14%.

James Suckling

Sweet blueberries, plums and cherries on the nose with a touch of ash and walnuts as well as dried and roasted spices. Medium- to full-bodied on the palate, this has fine-boned tannins and a lengthy finish packed with dark fruit and spices. 75% merlot and 25% cabernet franc. Drink from 2028.

Vinous Media

The 2022 La Serre has a vivacious bouquet with ebullient, wonderfully delineated red fruit laced with fresh fig and crushed violet scents. True to form, this is forward and generous in style. The palate is very smooth with blackberry, graphite and light tobacco notes and gentle grip on the finish. It is full and plush without being overbearing. This is a lip-smackingly delicious La Serra.

Wine Advocate

Notions of minty blackberries, cedar and licorice, along with subtle hints of leather, introduce the 2022 La Serre, a medium to full-bodied, supple and creamy wine with a rich core of fruit and a mineral finish. This isn't quite as pure and precise as it showed en primeur, but it's a solid effort.

WS 90pts

Wine Spectator

Suave, polished toast frames a core of plum and warmed cassis notes, while subtle hints of mesquite and black tea infuse the finish. Sneaky length. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2032. 1,750 cases made, 300 cases imported.
