White Bordeaux

France is widely known as being the home of many of the world's finest white wines, and within France, the name which rings out across the wine world and is always associated with excellence of quality and flavor is Bordeaux. The white wines of the magnificent Bordeaux region are typically blended, and rely on the winemaker's skill and expertise to achieve the fine balance between the primary grape varietals used. Most blended white Bordeaux wines are made up of Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Muscadelle varietals, although there are actually nine grapes officially allowed by French wine law for the inclusion in Bordeaux white wines. The other six are Sauvignon Gris, Merlot Blanc, Ugni Blanc, Colombard, Ondenc and Mauzac, although the use of these other grapes has been in steady decline over the past century.

Graves

Graves, a venerable appellation in Bordeaux, France, is renowned for its historical significance and the production of distinguished red and white wines. What makes Graves unique is its diverse terroir, featuring gravelly soils that not only lend the region its name but also provide excellent drainage and heat reflection, contributing to the ripening of grapes. Red wines from Graves are predominantly blends of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, offering a balanced expression of dark fruits, structure, and age-worthy potential. The appellation is also celebrated for its exceptional white wines, primarily crafted from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. These whites showcase bright acidity, citrus flavors, and a unique flinty character. This crackles with tarragon, fleur de sel, oyster shell and lemon pith notes that ripple throughout, while a steady core of yuzu and mirabelle plum moves through. Live-wire acidity keeps everything focused and mouthwatering. Lovely. Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. Drink now through 2033.

Sliced lemon, crushed stone, ginger and oyster shell aromas follow through to a medium body with crisp acidity and a crunchy finish. A very typical top white from Pessac. Drink now.

90-93 2023 Carbonnieux Blanc has a creamy, silky, vanilla like nose with hints of lychee fruit. The sweet and sour tones in the fruity taste are so classic for this chateau. It is a well composed glass of white Graves that can be enjoyed almost upon release.

Wine Advocate

Notes of white fruits, confit citrus, herbs and menthol emerge from the 2023 Blanc from Carbonnieux, a moderately weighted, elegant and sappy, enveloping and juicy wine with lot of freshness and a long, saline finish. This is a classic at this address and a real effort in the context of the vintage.

Jeb Dunnuck

A classic, impeccably balanced white, the 2023 Château Carbonnieux Blanc sports a medium gold hue as well as ripe citrus and stone fruits intermixed with minty herbs and a kiss of minerality. Based on 68% Sauvignon Blanc and 32% Sémillon and brought up 10 months on the lees in 70% French oak barrels (20% new) with the balance in 30- and 55-hectoliter wooden vats, it's medium-bodied and has a clean, focused mouthfeel, integrated acidity, and outstanding length. It will shine on the dinner table over the coming decade. Drink 2026-2036.
