Varietal

Red Bordeaux

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act – the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Appellation

Graves

Graves, a venerable appellation in Bordeaux, France, is renowned for its historical significance and the production of distinguished red and white wines. What makes Graves unique is its diverse terroir, featuring gravelly soils that not only lend the region its name but also provide excellent drainage and heat reflection, contributing to the ripening of grapes. Red wines from Graves are predominantly blends of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, offering a balanced expression of dark fruits, structure, and age-worthy potential. The appellation is also celebrated for its exceptional white wines, primarily crafted from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. These whites showcase bright acidity, citrus flavors, and a unique flinty character. A blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot aged 12 months in 30% new French oak, the 2023 Château Carbonnieux is a rocking little gem of a wine that's well worth your time. Cassis, graphite, spicy wood, and smoke all shine on the nose, and it's medium to full-bodied on the palate, with a ripe, round, layered mouthfeel, beautiful and building tannins, and a great finish. It's a nicely concentrated, classic, layered Pessac that has serious depth and length. It's going to cruise for two decades in cold cellars. Drink 2026-2046.

Wine Advocate

The 2023 Carbonnieux has turned out very well, revealing aromas of cassis, mulberries, flowers and spices, lifted by a discreet note of fresh licorice. Medium- to full-bodied, ample and sapid, it is enveloping, with good depth at the core framed by powdery tannins, concluding with a long, perfumed finish. Combining a gourmand profile with a classical sense of balance and structure, it represents very good value.

Wine Spectator

A sleek red, with a nervy thread of iris cutting nicely through a core of gently mulled black currant and black cherry fruit. Light flashes of mesquite and savory check in alongside a late, lingering tarry tug, all while the fruit keeps pace. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2037.

The Wine Independent

90-92 2023 Carbonnieux has a fleshy and fruity nose and a pleasant soft, cassis filled, velvety, elegant taste. The quality of the red Carbonnieux has risen in recent years and you feel this also in the purity of the fruit as well. It should develop nicely along this line and be approachable early on.

Decanter

Smells quite intense, perfumed and just quite heady - toast, tobacco, dried cherries and liquorice. Grippy on the finish, feels highly charged. There is some juice there but it’s quite liquorice laden with toasted edges. Strong and a bit overpowering.

Vinous Media

The 2023 Carbonnieux has a distant bouquet, dark berry fruit mixed with gravel that feels far away. By that word, "distant," it means that the aromatics are not inclined to engage or interact, occupy a different room. The palate is medium-bodied with a decent entry, well-defined and the oak is nicely integrated. It feels rather dry toward the finish that is a bit concerning.

Winery Notes

The vinification, both modern and traditional of red wines, is carried out by slow and gentle extraction in order to preserve the roundness of the wine and the mineral features of the soil. The tannins are well balanced and silky in harmony with red fruits (blackcurrant, blackberry, cherry…) and reveal toasted notes from ageing in the finest quality French oak barrels. Only the very best batches tasted are selected for the final blending of Château Carbonnieux red wines. Wine and food pairing : all grilled, roast, or stewed meat, swordfish, tuna fish, cheese, chocolate desserts…
