Red Bordeaux

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act – the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Appellation

Graves

Graves, a venerable appellation in Bordeaux, France, is renowned for its historical significance and the production of distinguished red and white wines. What makes Graves unique is its diverse terroir, featuring gravelly soils that not only lend the region its name but also provide excellent drainage and heat reflection, contributing to the ripening of grapes. Red wines from Graves are predominantly blends of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, offering a balanced expression of dark fruits, structure, and age-worthy potential. The appellation is also celebrated for its exceptional white wines, primarily crafted from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. These whites showcase bright acidity, citrus flavors, and a unique flinty character. Graves is home to renowned châteaux like Haut-Brion, a Premier Cru Classé, exemplifying the region's commitment to producing wines of exceptional quality and character. This wine has great fruit, rich tannins and attractive acidity. Round and with ripe spicy flavors, the wine already has good balance. Its acidity and crisp final fruitiness suggest a wine that will mature easily and gently. Drink from 2023.

Medium garnet-purple in color, the 2015 Olivier is a little reticent at this youthful stage, offering exciting glimpses at fragrant earth, black raspberries, black cherries and red currant scents with suggestions of mossy bark, bay leaves and tilled soil. Medium to full-bodied, it fills the palate with mineral and earth-laced red and black fruits with firm, grainy tannins and a lovely herbal lift on the finish.

Wine Spectator

Solidly ripe, showing a nice flow to the cassis and plum fruit flavors, carried by graphite and tar accents. A singed alder hint melds through the finish, with a tobacco note lurking down the road. Delivers purity and charm. Best from 2020 through 2030. 10,000 cases made.

Decanter

Following Denis Dubourdieu’s soil analysis, today this wine is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon and favours elegance over density. Smoky aromas of blackberries, refined and pure. A light touch but no lack of intensity. Stylish and long. Drinking Window 2019 - 2030.

The Wine Independent

Medium to deep garnet colored, the 2015 Olivier Rouge tumbles out of the glass with notions of warm cassis and baked plum, plus hints of bay leaves, tobacco, and smoked meats. The medium-bodied palate has a nice amount of chew to complement the lively black fruits and a lifted finish.
