A Pauillac that has been over-delivering from some time now, the 2020 Château Fonbadet reveals a healthy ruby/purple hue as well as textbook aromatics of blackcurrants, cassis, graphite, tobacco, and a kiss of background oak. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it’s balanced, has the vintage’s straight, focused style, and enough tannins to warrant 4-6 years of bottle age. It will keep for two decades.

Varietal Red Bordeaux

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act – the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Cedar, black plums, blackberries, graphite and lemon leaves on the nose. It’s medium-bodied with firm, polished tannins. Serious and mineral yet velvety too. Refined and long. 76% cabernet sauvignon and 24% merlot. Drink from 2025.

The 2020 Fonbadet is a soft, succulent Pauillac. Fruit and forward, but with bright acids, the 2020 has a lot to offer. I admit, I wanted a bit more complexity here, but the 2020 is nicely done and very easy to like. Red fruit, cedar and sweet pipe tobacco linger.

Succulent and grippy, with a cool blue fruit and chalky mineral edge, wet stones, slate and saltiness then coming through alongside blackcurrant and black cherries. This has soft muscles, gently flexing, giving a push to the fruit as well as supplying overall definition. Tannins are there but are fine and crisp. Power here, confidence as well; it's not too much with tension and focus. Pauillac-might but delicate.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2020 Chateau Fonbadet leaps with expressive black and red currant notes, followed by wafts of cedar, underbrush, and wild sage. Medium-bodied, soft and juicy in the mouth, it delivers a spicy kick on the long finish.

88-90 Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2020 Fonbadet opens with fragrant notes of kirsch, black raspberries and red roses, plus suggestions of tobacco leaf, graphite and redcurrant jelly, plus a hint of bay leaves. The medium-bodied palate is elegant and refreshing, offering a solid backbone of firm, chewy tannins, finishing savory.

Reserved in style, with cedar-lined red and black currant fruit that tilts to dried in feel, while a savory note peeks out along the way. Grainy finish. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Drink now through 2026. 5,000 cases made, 1,000 cases imported.
