The 2023 Fonbadet is a very sexy wine. Soft, racy contours wrap around a core of dark fruit. New leather, licorice, incense, gravel and dried herbs all build in the glass. The 2023 is done in an especially sumptuous, fruit-driven style. Readers should expect a big, bold Pauillac. This is the last vintage before most of the vineyards were sold to one of the top estates in the appellation.

Varietal

Red Bordeaux

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act – the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

This offers up dark and generous plum and blackberry compote flavors wrapped in a cool cast iron note that guides them through the walnut husk–, tobacco- and chestnut-accented finish. Hefty and tilting old-school, but with the energy to move along steadily. For the cellar. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Best from 2028 through 2040. 6,000 cases made.

Always a beautiful, classic Pauillac, the deep purple-hued 2023 Château Fonbadet does exceptionally well in the vintage. Based on 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot and aged 14-18 months in 100% new barrels, it offers darker currants, leafy tobacco, espresso, and gravelly earth as well as classic lead pencil nuances on the nose. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has ripe, building tannins and outstanding length. It's going to cruise for 20-25 years in a cold cellar. Drink 2029-2051.

Aromas of elderberries, blueberries, tobacco and cigar box. The palate is medium- to full-bodied with clear, focused fruit, chalky tannins and a vibrant, restrained character. Better from 2027.

Forest fresh and autumnal red fruit with cassis and graphite aromas reflect the high proportion of Cabernet. Oak derived toast complements the profile. The medium finish has an almost eucalyptus like freshness. Fine wine indeed, with a potential for a higher score after the barrel ageing.

89-91 Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2023 Fonbadet gives up notes of fresh red and black currants and Morello cherries plus hints of pencil lead, wild sage, and fallen leaves. The medium-bodied palate is elegant and lively, with lightly chewy tannins and a mineral lift on the finish.
