As usual, this estate crafted another sensual, delicate wine in a region where power and austerity are often the norm. The 2022 Haut-Marbuzet reveals an elegant, seductive bouquet of licorice, dark berries, cherries and flowers mingled with barely noticeable oak. Medium to full-bodied, seamless and layered, it’s enveloping with a fleshy core of fruit, velvety tannins and a long, mineral, almost saline finish. It’s a blend of 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

The Wine Independent

The 2022 from Haut-Marbuzet is a blend of 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc, and it presents a dense and modestly sauvage style of fruit on the nose, with dark hedgerow berries, liquorice, toast, black bean, melted tar and crushed white chalk. The palate follows in a ready, dark, flavoursome and juicy style, with a dense core of tightly packed and fine-grained tannins, supporting a layer of black and savoury fruits lifted by notes of white peach and orange peel. This has a deliciously coherent and taut style, with a long grip of tightly packed tannins. Juicy, coherent, complete, once this absorbs the slightly spirity oak and dense, close-knit tannic structure I am sure it will be superb. Chapeau! Tasted twice. The alcohol on the label is 14.5%.

The 2022 Haut-Marbuzet has a refined, finely delineated bouquet with black cherry, bilberry, orange rind and light leathery scents that unfold in the glass. The palate is well balanced with pliant, saturated tannins. As I wrote in my primeur note, this is a less bold and concentrated Haut-Marbuzet. Instead, one finds more precision and terroir expression, especially on the creamy-textured and persistent finish. This is excellent.
