Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2019 La Cabanne sashays out of the glass with fragrant notes of kirsch, black raspberries potpourri and fertile loam over a core of Black Forest cake and warm plums. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is juicy, softly texture and already very expressive, offering tons of freshness and a provocative mineral note on the finish.

Varietal Red Bordeaux

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act – the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Appellation Pomerol

Pomerol, a distinguished appellation on Bordeaux's Right Bank, stands as a vinous jewel celebrated for its exceptional Merlot-dominant red wines. What makes Pomerol unique is its relatively small size, allowing for an intimate focus on individual vineyards and an emphasis on artisanal winemaking. Unlike many Bordeaux regions, Pomerol does not have a formal classification system, placing the spotlight on each estate's intrinsic quality and distinct terroir. Merlot thrives in Pomerol's clay-rich soils, crafting wines of opulence, velvety texture, and alluring plum and black cherry notes. Iconic châteaux like Pétrus and Le Pin showcase the pinnacle of Pomerol's winemaking prowess. The absence of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blends further accentuates the appellation's uniqueness. Pomerol wines are revered for their approachability in youth and the ability to evolve gracefully over time, exemplifying the timeless elegance and allure of this exceptional Bordeaux appellation.

Perfumed nose of blackberries, purple plums, violets, cloves and lemon peel. It’s medium-to full-bodied with fine, supple tannins. Creamy and silky with a juicy finish. 100% merlot. Try from 2024.

The 2019 La Cabanne is a plush Pomerol loaded with inky dark red fruit, chocolate, mocha, espresso and sweet spice. This has turned out well. Drink it over the next 10-15 years.

A lovely Cabanne from owner François Estager - creamy, deep and plenty of Pomerol signature. Creamy texture with concentrated liquorice root and softer chocolate shavings. Gourmet edged with clear power. It has sweet blue and blackberry fruit expression but balanced out with fresh acidities. Thomas Duclos consultant. Drinking Window 2024 - 2040.

The 2019 Château La Cabanne is another solid release from this château. Revealing a deep ruby/plum color as well as spicy, complex notes of ripe black cherries, camphor, dried herbs, and exotic spice, it's medium to full-bodied, has a round, lush, pleasure-bent style, and the balance to evolve for 10-15 years. It's another terrific Pomerol in 2019.
