I loved the 2022 Château Latour A Pomerol. This deep ruby/purple-hued beauty is all Merlot, harvested from the 1st to the 8th of September, that’s pulled from eight hectares of deep gravelly and clay soils. Red and black fruits, truffly earth, spicy oak, and graphite, as well as a beautiful sense of minerality, all shine here, and it’s concentrated and medium to full-bodied on the palate, with a layered, seamless mouthfeel, beautiful tannins, and a great finish. This brilliant Pomerol is hard to resist today, yet I suspect it will have 2-3 decades of overall longevity. It’s the finest vintage from this château I’ve tasted.

A ripe and opulent Latour a Pomerol, aromas of currants and raspberry puree following through to a medium body. This has a firm and silky palate from fine tannins that frame the luscious fruit nicely. Juicy finish. 85% merlot and 15% cabernet franc. Drink after 2028.

Intense aromatics on the nose. This is smooth and succulent but also tense and straight. Tannins have a soft fleshiness to them that comes across as slightly chalky on the palate with edges of heat, toast, clove and cedar spice that just detract slightly from the clarity of the fruit which is dark and focused on blackcurrant and prune with an undercurrent of cooling mint. It's serious in terms of flavours but has a finessed texture. One that feels extremely young and not yet quite settled. Power is undeniable alongside some Pomerol seduction so when the flavours meld a little more this will be lovely.

Medium in body, the 2022 Latour à Pomerol is a linear wine built more on aromatic expressiveness and persistence rather than size. The vegetal quality it showed en primeur is absent today. Instead, the 2022 delivers notes of red fruit, blood orange, cedar, spice and dried herbs. Potent tannins and a somber fruit profile give the 2022 its decidedly virile feel today.

From a property on the Pomerol slopes, this is 100% Merlot. I like the concentrated but lifted purity on the nose here, combining lightly desiccated black summer fruits with dried rose petals, tobacco, dark chocolate and slate. The palate takes it up a notch, with dark, glossy and concentrated black fruits nuanced with orange peel and white peach, with a modest grain of tannins underneath it all, and plenty of peppery spice alongside. It finishes rich, grippy, peppery and on the warmer side. This leans towards the modern a little, with a rather spirity edge to the finish, but I can see some good points here. For those who prefer a more modern style – the modern-curious is perhaps the term I should use.
