There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

#55 in Top 100, 2022. From the talented Michel Rolland, the 2019 Château Le Bon Pasteur shines for its richness as well as its elegance. Ripe black cherries, currants, tobacco leaf, chocolate, and floral notes all define the bouquet, and it has the vintage’s fresher, pure, vibrant style in both its aromas and flavors. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has fabulous tannins, a seamless, layered mouthfeel, no hard edges, and a great finish. It’s already hard to resist yet has another 20-25 years of prime drinking ahead of it.

The 2019 Le Bon Pasteur retains the precision and focus that I found in the barrel sample, offering aromas of blackberry and raspberry fruit and touches of rose petal and espresso. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, plenty of lightly spiced red fruit and a little dried blood toward the finish, which retains wonderful composure. This is a superb Le Bon Pasteur, the best I have encountered in recent years.

Beautifully expressive nose, wild flowers, summer berries and sweet cinnamon. Still seriously tannic at the moment but they are well textured like crushed velvet giving a chalky aspect to the palate. Lively juicy fruit and I like the really delicate perfume on this. It's a rich and bold style, heady, but carefully presented, everything in line, still quite tight at the moment and run by the tannins but there's nuance and a sense of style here. A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc.

Cedar chest and pencil lead notes waft over a core of baked black plums and mulberries with a hint of cardamom. The medium to full-bodied palate is savory and chewy, with bags of juicy black fruits and a long earthy finish.

Great wines, dense, intense, with a deep color and aromas of ripe fruits, full-bodied with beautiful silky tannins and a great length. These are wines to be kept, but they are soft and fleshy. A success.
