Vivid floral (iris and peony and violet), forest freshness and wet stone beguile the senses. A palate that has opulence but superb balancing acidity – a low 3.52pH – with freshness, grip, and energy that doesn’t end. A long seashell like finish makes this a top of its class among the Grands Crus Classés. Mildew was a challenge but being nearly 90m high the vineyard had more wind, so a bit less threatening, explained co-owner and winemaker Emilie Faniest. The later ripening vineyard took full advantage of the long harvest season, with exellent selection of only the best Merlots. The 75% new oak is very well integrated and complements the fruit.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Smoke, red and black fruits, chalky minerality, camphor, truffles, and graphite all emerge from the 2023 Château Rochebelle, and it's medium to full-bodied, with a pure, graceful, layered mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and a great finish. You could safely put this up with the crème de la crème from Saint-Emilion. It's going to have two decades or more of longevity. Drink 2026-2046.

Aromas of ripe plums, cassis, warm bread, chalk, hazelnuts and finely roasted spices. Medium- to full-bodied, with plenty of structured, chalky tannins. Long and precise. Shows lots of energy, with a limestone-driven texture. 85% merlot and 15% cabernet franc. Drink now or hold.

92-94 The 2023 Rochebelle is deep garnet-purple in color. It needs a little swirling and coaxing to bring out notes of black cherries, fresh blackberries, and raspberry coulis, leading to hints of tree bark and crushed rocks. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is chock-full of vibrant black fruits, supported by plush tannins and great tension, finishing long and minerally.

88-90 The 2023 Rochebelle is a rich, heady Saint-Émilion. Black cherry, plum, licorice, spice, new leather, tobacco, incense and dried herbs power through. I find the 2023 a bit heavy and pushed, with a mid-palate that is not fully formed. This was barreled down late, so we will see how it develops with élevage.
