A modern and dense St.-Emilion with rich, glossy fresh fruit. Plums, dark chocolate, fine spices and a hint of olives on the nose. Juicy, with some nicely tart berries and dusty tannins on the full-bodied palate. Concentrated and tight in the finish, but polished. Very well executed. Drink from 2028.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

A blend of 92% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2022 Château Sansonnet is gorgeous stuff, offering cassis, crushed stone, graphite, and truffly aromatics. Beautifully pure and medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has integrated acidity, a fresh, focused style, and ripe tannins. Balanced and seamless, it shows the terroir’s freshness and precision while still bringing concentration and texture. Aged for 18 months in 70% new oak barrels, this should drink well for 20+ years. Total production: 1,166 cases.

The 2022 Sansonnet is an ample, dark wine. Black cherry, chocolate, new leather, licorice, incense and espresso all take shape in this decidedly potent, explosive Saint-Émilion. Readers will find a wine of unctuous density and volume. It's another striking offering from proprietor Marie Benedicte Lefevere.

This is supple and enticing in feel, with a mix of red and black currant fruit that shows nice underlying energy as notes of cedar, singed mesquite and iron play out through the lightly toasted finish. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2026 through 2036. 1,300 cases made.

This is a blend of 92% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, the élevage 16 months in 70% new oak, the rest in old barrels, foudre s and amphorae. A nose of sweet and slightly baked red cherry and redcurrant fruits, with fragrant notes of rose petal and violet, and a touch of lactones from the oak. This is followed by a supple, polished and quite charming texture, the palate filled out with jet black fruits, all dark currant, black cherry, damson and dark chocolate, with an underpinning of finely knit and ripe tannins which come to the fore on the finish, drying but not dominating the length. This is a very modern style with sweet fruit which works well despite the robust alcohol and dense texture. One for the modernistas. Tasted twice. The alcohol on the label is 15%.
