92-94 Deeper and more concentrated than the 2018, the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape is as impressive as I can remember this cuvée ever being. Dark in hue, overflowing with dark fruit, full-bodied and velvety in texture, with a long, licorice-tinged finish, this looks very promising.

The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. The continental climate of the region is ideal for growing grapes, and the winds which blow from the Central Massif help temper the heat in the vineyards, leading to very ripe fruits holding plenty of flavor.

Stating a whopping 16% alcohol on the label, the 2019 Châteauneuf-du-Pape follows the lines of intensely concentrated and complex red wines that Clos Saint-Jean followers are constantly raving about. It has an edge over the 2020, bursting from the glass with pungent aromas of blood orange, cooked red and black fruits, dried lavender, licorice, mint and cured meat. Ripe tannins give structure to the full-bodied palate, which is neatly balanced by bright acidity.

Moving to the 2019s, this is clearly a gorgeous vintage from this estate, and you can’t go wrong with any of these wines. The base 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape has loads of Provençal garrigue, sandalwood, and red and black fruit aromatics as well as a full-bodied, ripe, seamless style on the palate. Drink it over the coming decade.
