The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. Despite its overtly oaky, toasty profile, the 2023 Chateauneuf du Pape Matteo remains well-balanced and harmonious. It opens with aromas of vanilla, baking spices, dark berries and garrigue. Medium- to full-bodied, dense and structured, it is framed by velvety tannins that carry through to a long, spicy and penetrating finish. A blend of 80% Grenache Noir and 20% Syrah, matured in a combination of large barrels, used barrels and concrete tanks, this cuvée wears its wood influence with surprising grace, avoiding the excess dryness or toastiness that can sometimes accompany such élevage.
