Medium to deep garnet colored, the 2015 Couvent des Jacobins needs some swirling to uncover notions of stewed black plums, black cherries, and boysenberries, plus suggestions of iron ore, rose oil, and sandalwood. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers a generous amount of black fruit preserves, supported by velvety tannins and soft acidity, finishing long and spicy.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

An impressive nose with plenty of ripe red berries and cherries as well as violets and deep-set spiced and earthy notes. The palate has a very plush, deep and ripe feel to it with concentrated plum and mulberry flavors, though it freshens into the finish. Try from 2022.

The 2015 Couvent des Jacobins has a very opulent bouquet that fortunately appears to coalesce in the glass and eventually settles towards scents of boysenberry, strawberry pastilles and a touch of violet. The oak seems nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. There is plenty of new oak on the entry that will need to be subsumed, but I appreciate the tannic structure and freshness on the finish that lingers nicely in the mouth. It might not have the complexity of its peers, but it should drink well after 3-4 years in bottle.

The 2015 Clos des Jacobins is pliant, supple and engaging. Plush fruit and soft, silky tannins add to an impression of total sophistication. Cedar, tobacco, menthol, black cherry and plum fruit all flesh out in a racy, inviting Saint-Émilion that will drink well with minimal cellaring. Tasted two times.

Made from 85% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot that was harvest between September 25th and October 15th, the 2015 Couvent Des Jacobins is another terrific wine from this vintage. Black cherries, graphite, leather, and hints of toasty oak all emerge from this rich, full-bodied, ripe and beautifully concentrated effort. With fine tannin and a good finish. It should drink nicely for a decade.
