Country

United States

Of all the New World wine countries, perhaps the one which has demonstrated the most flair for producing high quality wines - using a combination of traditional and forward-thinking contemporary methods - has been the United States of America. For the past couple of centuries, the United States has set about transforming much of its suitable land into vast vineyards, capable of supporting a wide variety of world-class grape varietals which thrive on both the Atlantic and the Pacific coastlines. Of course, we immediately think of sun-drenched California in regards to American wines, with its enormous vineyards responsible for the New World's finest examples of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot based wines, but many other states have taken to viticulture in a big way, with impressive results. Oregon, Washington State and New York have all developed sophisticated and technologically advanced wine cultures of their own, and the output of U.S wineries is increasing each year as more and more people are converted to their produce.

Region

California

California as a wine producing region has grown in size and importance considerably over the past couple of centuries, and today is the proud producer of more than ninety percent of the United States' wines. Indeed, if California was a country, it would be the fourth largest producer of wine in the world, with a vast range of vineyards covering almost half a million acres. The secret to California's success as a wine region has a lot to do with the high quality of its soils, and the fact that it has an extensive Pacific coastline which perfectly tempers the blazing sunshine it experiences all year round. The winds coming off the ocean cool the vines, and the natural valleys and mountainsides which make up most of the state's wine regions make for ideal areas in which to cultivate a variety of high quality grapes.

Appellation

Central Coast

The long and narrow Central Coast wine region of California stretches for approximately two hundred and fifty miles down the Pacific coastline, and holds hundreds of important Californian wineries who grow a wide array of imported grape varietals. As with the rest of California, the Central Coast region benefits enormously from the hot and sunny climate, which allows the grapes grown there to reach full ripeness and express plenty of big, juicy flavors and rich aromas. Dozens of grapes varietals are grown successfully on the Central Coast, however, classic French varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The region is renowned for its modern and experimental approach to viticulture, and with over 90,000 acres under vine, this is a veritable powerhouse of wine production in one of the most important New World regions on earth.

The Syrah-dominated 2022 Dirt Worshipper (91% Syrah, with small amounts of Petit Verdot, Clairette Blanche, Graciano, and Viognier) displays a deep ruby hue and fabulous aromatics of darker berries, spring flowers, camphor, underbrush, and flowers. Medium to full-bodied, it has a seamless, layered mouthfeel, ultra-fine tannins, and a great finish. Aged 20 months in 30% new French and Hungarian oak, it's one of the fresher, more focused, vibrant 2022s from Paso and should have 10-15 years of prime drinking. Drink 2025-2040.

Vinous Media

The 2022 Dirt Worshipper is enticingly dark and brooding in the glass. A whiff of exotic spice combines with peppery sage, crushed blackberries, lavender and ashen stone on the nose. Silken textures sweep across the palate while maintaining a lifted and graceful feel, as waves of tart red and black fruits saturate. Echoes of blue and purple inner florals linger as the 2022 tapers off long and potent, with a coating of sweet tannins framing the experience beautifully. This does not display the typical power of the Dirt Worshipper, yet it possesses an inner harmony that transports me to the Northern Rhône.

Joyous and juicy aromas of boysenberry, rich baking spice and an earthy wood tone converge in wondrous ways on the nose of this co-fermented blend of 91% Syrah, 3% Petit Verdot, 3% Clairette Blanche, 2% Graciano and 1% Viognier. The palate is lush and expansive, showing black cherry, vanilla and star anise flavors that are cut by a spicy pinch of cracked black pepper.
