The de Montille parcel here is 1.62ha near Les Avaux, at the foot of the slope in clay soils, and one-third of the grapes are fermented as whole clusters. The initial impression is one of forward, energetic primary fruit, with a silky texture cloaking discreet tannins on the palate to good effect.

Racked just before harvest, the 2019 Beaune Les Sizes ler Cru has a lifted red cherry and crushed strawberry nose with touches of undergrowth coming through. The well-balanced palate offers crunchy red berry fruit, the 15% new oak nicely integrated and the 30% whole cluster imparting black pepper notes on the finish. Very fine.

Cool and appealingly fresh aromas include those of red and dark berries, violet, earth and a pretty spice whiff. The racy, intense and mineral suffused flavors possess fine precision that carries over to the youthfully austere, dusty and focused finale. Very solid quality here in a package that should repay mid-term aging.
