Rhone Valley

The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. The continental climate of the region is ideal for growing grapes, and the winds which blow from the Central Massif help temper the heat in the vineyards, leading to very ripe fruits holding plenty of flavor.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape, an illustrious wine appellation in the Southern Rhône Valley, France, stands as a vinous icon recognized for its robust red blends. More expressive and lively than the entry-level cuvée, the 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Grande Réserve from Domaine La Boutinière exhales a smoky, slightly oaky bouquet of dark wild berries, licorice, cinnamon and spices. Medium to full-bodied, dense and structured, it has a powerful, rich mid-palate with a fleshy core of fruit and dense but elegant tannins complemented by chocolate and tapenade notes. This blend of 85% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre and 5% Syrah, matured in demi-muids and foudres, is crafted from vines planted mainly on sandy, calcareous soils in the northern part of the plateau of La Crau. It should improve with a decade in the cellar.

Winery Notes

The wine initially presents morello cherries, plums, blood orange, red fruit in brandy, dried figs and raisins followed by sandalwood, pralines, smoky, subtle notes of blond tobacco, undergrowth and humus. On the palate, the complexity on the palate validates the nose, with its stone fruits and Mirabelle plum, brandy, then candied orange peel. On the finish, fine spices, nutmeg, fresh licorice and black pepper accompany the notes of garrigue on the finish. The balance is unique for a wine that offers a full and generous body. The acidity and freshness on the palate are remarkable for a wine from this southern latitude. A racy wine, supple and caressing like velvet. This cuvée is of singular nobility. This will pair beautifully with stews, game, roasted or leg of lamb and aged cheeses. The ageing potential is 20 years.
