The flagship wine of this Sicilian estate, the Donnafugata 2021 Sicilia Mille e Una Notte is a robust and layered super Sicilian blend of Nero d’Avola, Petit Verdot and Syrah. It offers a full spectrum of aromas, spanning black plum and blackberry to charred spice, cola, black olive and sweet earth. The wine is nearly full-bodied, yet a more delicate moment on the mid-palate creates an upswing that adds momentum and builds length across the polished finish. That element works especially well in this vintage. Aged for approximately 12 months in new French oak barriques and nearly two years in bottle, this is a very successful edition of an iconic red from the heart of the Mediterranean. Production is an ample 94,000 bottles.

Nero D'avola

One of the key flagship grape varietals of the beautiful island of Sicily is Nero d'Avola, a black skinned grape which is recognized as being one of Italy's most important and long lasting indigenous grapes. Often, wines made from the Nero d'Avola varietal are compared with Australian Shiraz wines, as they share the same spicy, peppery and fruit-forward notes, and are easily drinkable with a sunny, juicy character which makes them ideal for pairing with a wide range of foods. The Nero d'Avola has been grown in the Sicilian region of Avola for centuries, but has more recently been cultivated in California and elsewhere in the New World, where it thrives in arid landscapes and hot climates. As such, the ancient influence of this grape varietal is beginning to find fans all over the globe, and is likely to spread to even more countries in the near future.

Indeed, Sicilian wineries are famed for their ability to capture something of the sun-drenched region in their wines, and the vines they cultivate benefit enormously from the almost constant sunshine and the incredibly fertile volcanic soils which typify the island.

The 2021 Mille e Una Notte is dark and brooding, smoldering up with a beguiling bouquet of dusty sage and cedar shavings, enhanced by nuances of menthol and cocoa before giving way to blackcurrant. Savory to the core, it offers velvety textures lifted by brisk acidity as a mass of red fruit saturates the senses. The 2021 grips the palate with youthful tension and finishes with a wall of tannins nicely contrasted by a tinge of citrus and licorice. This powerful rendition of Mille e Una Notte will require extreme patience.
