Today, the island is one of Italy's primary wine regions, and even though over eighty percent of Sicily's grapevines are used for the production of sweet fortified wines, the remaining wineries making other wine styles are renowned around the world for their quality and character. Indeed, Sicilian wineries are famed for their ability to capture something of the sun-drenched region in their wines, and the vines they cultivate benefit enormously from the almost constant sunshine and the incredibly fertile volcanic soils which typify the island.

With Donnafugata’s Etna red portfolio now more complete, the Donnafugata 2022 Etna Rosso Sul Vulcano functions as its classic, introductory expression. The wine presents Nerello Mascalese in simple terms, with dried cherry and strawberry reflecting a degree of ripeness that detracts from the complexity achieved in a cooler growing season. The palate remains enjoyable, open-knit and fresh, with an easy approach. The fruit comes primarily from vineyards at 600 to 750 meters in elevation on the northern slope of Etna. The wine aged for approximately 18 months, partly in tank and partly in second- and third-use barriques, followed by at least 18 months in bottle. It finishes lean and short. Production is 141,000 bottles.

Winery Notes

Pale ruby red, Sul Vulcano offers an elegant bouquet with notes of wild berries (strawberry and red currant) and flowery scents, along with delicate spicy nuances of cinnamon and nutmeg. Perfect harmony between aroma and taste, with good freshness and harmonious tannins. A long, balanced finish. Perfect with Mediterranean antipasti and first courses based on eggplant or mushrooms, meat and roast stew. Also great with Asian dishes (beef stir-fried, dumplings) to fusion cuisine like Tex-Mex based on meat and beans.
