The superfine tannins give this an incredibly fine texture, the richness building in the finish without adding anything to the impression of weight. From three old-vine grenache vineyards that have limestone, sand and galet soils. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. The continental climate of the region is ideal for growing grapes, and the winds which blow from the Central Massif help temper the heat in the vineyards, leading to very ripe fruits holding plenty of flavor.

Kirsch, Provençal herbs, and floral nuances all emerge from the 2023 Châteauneuf Du Pape Colombis, a sappy, peppery effort that's incredibly perfumed and shows the refined, classy, flawlessly balanced style of this estate today. It's medium to full-bodied, with ultra-fine tannins, no hard edges, and a juicy finish that makes you salivate. This beauty is absolutely impossible to resist today, yet I see no reason it shouldn't evolve beautifully for 15 years if well stored. Drink 2025-2040.

Expressive, perfumed and ripe, with a glossy stream of bitter cherry and steeped plum anchored by bolts of iron. Warm spice, licorice, sanguine and grilled anise notes merge in, with a vivid flash of alpine herbs and singed alder smoke. A weighty, well-structured red that’s still unwinding yet is impressively approachable now. Ends with intense mineral drive, with cashmere-fine tannins going the distance. Beautiful. A soft, juicy and approachable wine, only medium-bodied, with good acidity and freshness. It’s remarkably crisp for a pure Grenache. Not the most concentrated in fruit perhaps, but it’s very drinkable and well balanced. Pure whole-bunch Grenache grown in three lieux dits: Colombis, Crista nord and Rayas; fermented in concrete, then aged one-third each in concrete, foudre and amphora.

A pure Grenache Noir planted in the north part of the appellation and vinified with 30% whole bunches, the 2023 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Colombis has turned out beautifully. Evoking aromas of rose, dark cherries, spices and dark berries, it’s medium- to full-bodied, seamless and satiny with a beautifully ethereal finish.

Wrapped around smooth tannins providing elegant structure, the 2023 is an energetic, concentrated and inviting Colombis that will benefit from at least two more years in a cool cellar. The 2023 rounds out with impressive length on the focused finale.

Winery Notes

100% Grenache from three parcels: Colombis with a sandy soil, les Roues with a predominately clay soil, and le Cristia with a sandy soil. The vines average 60 years-old. Whole-cluster fermented and aged in neutral demi-muids for 18 months.
