Sangiovese

The name of this grape, meaning 'blood of Jove' conjures up evocative images of long dead civilizations, and gives the Sangiovese varietal a sense of the holy, the sacred, the special. Indeed, this particular type of Italian grape has been cultivated and processed for thousands of years, and is said to be the original favorite grape varietal of the Romans, and the Etruscans before them. Throughout history, vintners have continued to plant this varietal, and they continue to produce wonderful wines to this day. The long bunches of very dark, round fruit are treasured by fine wineries in Italy and a few other places around the world, and when young, these grapes are lively â€“ full of strawberry flavors and a little spiciness. However, it is when they are aged in oak that they take on some truly special flavors and aromas, as seen in some of the finest wines of the Old World.

In the bottle with the black label, the Fanti 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Le Macchiarelle was born in a vintage that naturally delivers more fruit weight and concentrated richness. You feel that here thanks to flavors of blackberry pie with the crust, rum cake and tarry spice. There is some sweetness on the close that appears to come both from the fruit and also from the toasted oak used in aging. The wine matures in tonneaux for a long 42 months followed by 18 months in bottle. This oak-heavy Riserva needs more time to flesh out. Production is 8,000 bottles.

Graceful style for this riserva with its blood-orange, cinnamon and even yellow-fruit characters allied to fresh red berries. Its intoxicating definition is completed on the palate by full body and fruit concentration with almost silky, very ripe tannins, super-refreshing acidity and a vibrant finish. Warming at the end but otherwise outstanding. Drinkable now but best from 2026.
