This is a fantastic new Chianti Classico from the Mazzei family, from a small estate near Castellina in Chianti. Shows so many perfumes of cherries, strawberries, violets, spices and dried oranges that follow through to a full yet tight and very agile palate. Supple. Intense yet very fine tannins. Extremely long and polished. Drinkable, but better in 2021.

Sangiovese

The name of this grape, meaning 'blood of Jove' conjures up evocative images of long dead civilizations, and gives the Sangiovese varietal a sense of the holy, the sacred, the special. Indeed, this particular type of Italian grape has been cultivated and processed for thousands of years, and is said to be the original favorite grape varietal of the Romans, and the Etruscans before them. Throughout history, vintners have continued to plant this varietal, and they continue to produce wonderful wines to this day. The long bunches of very dark, round fruit are treasured by fine wineries in Italy and a few other places around the world, and when young, these grapes are lively â€“ full of strawberry flavors and a little spiciness. However, it is when they are aged in oak that they take on some truly special flavors and aromas, as seen in some of the finest wines of the Old World.

There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. Grapes were first being grown and cultivated on Italian soil several thousand years ago by the Greeks and the Pheonicians, who named Italy 'Oenotria' – the land of wines – so impressed were they with the climate and the suitability of the soil for wine production. Of course, it was the rise of the Roman Empire which had the most lasting influence on wine production in Italy, and their influence can still be felt today, as much of the riches of the empire came about through their enthusiasm for producing wines and exporting it to neighbouring countries. Since those times, a vast amount of Italian land has remained primarily for vine cultivation, and thousands of wineries can be found throughout the entire length and breadth of this beautiful country, drenched in Mediterranean sunshine and benefiting from the excellent fertile soils found there. Italy remains very much a 'land of wines', and one could not imagine this country, its landscape and culture, without it.

For almost three thousand years, this region has been recognized as an ideal home for wine production on a large scale, and the ancient Etruscans, Greeks and Romans all noticed that fine grape varietals flourished on the unique soils and under the hot sunshine which typifies the area. Today, Tuscany is home to a wide range of wines, from the traditional to the complex, but all dedicated to excellent flavors and aromas, and maintaining the region's international reputation.

This is a new project (and a second, independent brand) headed by the Mazzei family of Castello di Fonterutoli. The Caggio 2015 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Ipsus strives for Sangiovese purity and a sense of place. It achieves both, thanks to careful work in identifying a cool growing site for the Tuscan variety and a classic or traditional approach to winemaking with carefully managed maceration and aging in oak tonneaux. The results are soulful and profound with wild blueberry or raspberry, forest floor, blue flower and clove-flavored orange peel. The tannins are supple and smooth, yet there is enough structure and linearity to carry the wine forward in time. This was a warm and sunny vintage, and I can't imagine a better growing season from which to create an inaugural wine such as this. Ipsus is a new addition to a very limited group of vinous icons from Tuscany.

This red exhibits black cherry, raspberry, blueberry and mineral aromas and flavors. Dense and concentrated, yet supple and fluid, with a civilized swath of tannins and vibrant acidity backing the complex flavors. Long aftertaste. A terrific debut of a new single-vineyard Sangiovese from the Mazzei family. Drink now through 2038. 200 cases made, 30 cases imported.

The final bottle was the 2015 Ipsus from Caggio. This maiden release comes from 6.5 hectares of Sangiovese owned by the Mazzei family, matured 50% new tonneaux and 50% in stainless steel, plus eight months in cement vat. This was the first time I had tasted Ipsus, and I was impressed. Sure, it is primal on the nose and needs another year or two to subsume the oak, but it offers gorgeous scents of ebullient red fruit tinged with crushed violets and a hint of peppermint. The palate has more density than a lot of Chianti Classico and is quite insistent in terms of grip, offering pure blood-orange-infused, luxuriant red fruit toward the grippy finish. It improved with aeration and after a couple of hours was more open and floral. Superb.

This 2015 Ipsus Chianti Classico Caggio Gran Selezione is the Mazzei family's first ever vintage from this property which they bought in 2006. This wine has sweet, heady, subtly integrated spice notes on the nose with cherry and wild herb. It is a creamy mid-weight wine, super-stylish with wonderfully integrated oak but there is not a huge depth of concentration or range of flavors yet. It is nevertheless very charming and refined.

IPSUS has a distinguished power which represents its own unique terroir, Il Caggio. Fine and silky tannins are combined with red berries, cherries and the aromas of blood orange peel. Touches of violet, roses and lavender are seasoned with delicate spices and crushed stones. IPSUS, with its tightly-wound texture and long, savoury finish, is an electrifying wine. A wine with great ageing potential, it is endlessly intriguing, and will not cease to delight you. IPSUS has courage with a touch of arrogance and the soul of a dreamer. IPSUS pushes the boundaries of Tuscan winemaking.
