The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Macherelles is showing especially well this year, offering up aromas of pear, lime, white flowers, toasted nuts, fresh mint and warm bread. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and layered, it’s seamless and complete, with excellent depth at the core and a saline finish.

Varietal

Chardonnay

Of all the white wine grape varietals, surely the one that has spread the furthest and is most widely appreciated is Chardonnay. This green-skinned grape is now grown all over the Old and New Worlds, from New Zealand to the Americas, from England to Chile, and is one of the first varietals people think of when considering white wine grapes. Perhaps this is because of its huge popularity, which reached a peak in the 1990s, thanks to new technologies combining with traditional methods to bring the very best features out of the Chardonnay grape and allow its unique qualities to shine through. Most fine Chardonnay wines use a process known as malolactic fermentation, wherein the malic acids in the grape juice are converted to lactic acids, allowing a creamier, buttery nature to come forward in the wine. No grape varietal is better suited to this process than Chardonnay, which manages to balance these silky, creamy notes with fresh white fruit flavors beautifully.

Appellation

Cote De Beaune

The beautifully and unforgettable French region of Cote De Beaune has been revered throughout the centuries, and recognized as one of the key producer's of the world's finest white wines. The region is highly respected as an excellent producer of Chardonnay wines, and the Chardonnay grapes which grow there, on the southern slopes of the Cote d'Or, are packed full of the unique and powerful characteristics of this very special terroir. Interestingly, Cote De Beaune produces more red wine than white wine, despite its white wines being so famous. The red wines of Cote De Beaune are mainly made from Pinot Noir, but are relatively very light and fruity in their character, perfect for sipping on a warm, sunny day alongside a wide range of foods.

Vinous Media

The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet La Macherelle 1er Cru has an understated nose that might be overshadowed by Simon Colin's preceding Les Chaumées, although there is real terroir expression and complexity when you look deep. It is just not a "shouty" '22. The palate is well balanced with a tangy entry, fine acidity, a "correct" Chassagne that is unapologetically linear and strict on the oyster shell-tinged finish. Very fine, but be patient. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.
