Rhone Valley

The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. Opaque ruby. Displays potent, smoke-accented, dark fruit preserves, licorice, exotic spice and dark chocolate qualities on the powerful, mineral-accented nose. Broad and fleshy on the palate, offering deeply pitched black and blue fruit, black cardamom, candied violet, olive and bitter chocolate flavors that become sweeter as the wine opens up. Youthfully chewy tannins add grip to a very long, smoky finish that echoes the black fruit, licorice and spice notes.

The flagship wine of this producer, this velveteen Syrah matured 18 months in 100% new French oak. Crème de cassis and blueberry compote on the palate are shaded by streaks of allspice, smoke and licorice candy. Opulent and silky in profile, the wine shows well already but will meld and gain subtlety through 2035 at least.

Finesse, balance and intensity summarize this wine. Supple tannins and aromatic complexity reminds us the beauty of this terroir. Dark purple with potent aromas of blackberry liqueur, licorice and floral oils that are complicated by a peppery note and a hint of vanillin oak. Dense, round and seamless on the palate, showing a suave, velvety texture to its flavors of dark berry compote and cola. The long, sweet finish features impressive energy, lush tannins and an exotic floral pastille flourish. Pairs with red meats, stuffed eggplant or strong cheeses.
