Varietal

Red Bordeaux

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act – the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Saint Emilion

The beautiful sub-region of Saint Emilion in France's legendary Bordeaux region is regarded as the home of many of the world's finest red wines. The blending techniques employed in Saint Emilion have been passed down for generations, and aim to express the very finest flavors of the grape varietals used, most commonly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The climatic conditions in Saint Emilion are perfect for growing many of the Bordeaux grapes, and high yields of exceptional quality are commonplace. Fed by the mighty Gironde river and benefiting from superb clay and gravel based soils, Saint Emilion produces millions of bottles of high quality blended and unblended red wines each year, and continues to be a firm favorite of wine experts and the general public alike.

WE 95pts

Wine Enthusiast

93-95 Barrel Sample. This second wine of Cheval Blanc is produced from four separate parcels that can change each year. It has dense black-fruit aromas and great spice and layers of acidity. The wine is balanced, concentrated and likely to age well.

JS 94pts

James Suckling

The crunchy second wine of Cheval Blanc with a good tannin backbone. Aromas of red currants, blackberries, cedar and hints of pepper and paprika. Medium-bodied with chewy tannins and a spicy finish. Firm and racy. 50% merlot and 50% cabernet franc. Needs three or four years to come together. Try after 2028.

VM 94pts

Vinous Media

The 2023 Le Petit Cheval represents 10% of the estate's production. It's a blend taken from four parcels with a bit more sand than what is commonly found at the property. Floral top notes, red-toned fruit, blood orange, mint, spice and cedar lend notable aromatic intensity. Pliant and expansive on the palate, the Petit Cheval is superb in 2023.

TWI 94pts

The Wine Independent

92-94 Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2023 Le Petit Cheval storms out of the glass with powerful earthy/savory notes of tar, tapenade, and underbrush giving way to a core of ripe black plums, boysenberries, and iris bulb with a fragrant touch of dried Provence herbs. The medium-bodied palate is satin-soft and refreshing, with a well-sustained mid-palate of savory flavors, finishing with a cheeky red berry lift. The blend is 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Franc, aged in 1-year barrels with no new oak. Le Petit Cheval accounts for 10% of production.

DC 93pts

Decanter

Very floral and highly perfumed on the nose. Supple and agile, this has weight and a super smooth texture - quite tart and high in acidity though with liquorice, aniseed, clove and some wet stone minerality that gives the fine tannins a real chalky grip around the mouth. It’s a little austere and youthful but it has structure and muscle and lots of ripe fruit as well as freshness. Not charming and welcoming but sleek, straight and focussed. Ageing 14-16 months in one year barrels. 3.8pH.

JD 93pts

Jeb Dunnuck

Bright cassis and graphite notes as well as spicy wood, dried herbs, and tobacco all emerge from the 2023 Château Cheval Blanc Le Petit Cheval, the second wine of this reference point estate that was pulled from healthy yields of 39 hectoliters per hectare. Based on equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Franc from the more sandy parcels and aged 16 months in once-used barrels, it's a juicy, gorgeous wine in its own right. I love its complex, supple, elegant style, and it's medium-bodied, has ripe tannins, and a great finish. There are roughly 1,300 cases produced, and it hit 13.5% natural alcohol with a pH of 3.77. Drink 2027-2038.

WS 92pts

Wine Spectator

Offers a seductive, crumpled velvet mouthfeel, along with gently steeped black cherry and black currant fruit flavors laced with alder, sweet bay and warm stone notes. All that in a generally forward and accessible package, though there’s enough to merit mid-term cellaring. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2035. 1,250 cases made, 90 cases imported.

WA 91pts

Wine Advocate

The 2023 Le Petit Cheval has turned out nicely in bottle (it was bottled in July 2025), offering up notes of mulberries, plum preserve and rose petals, followed by a medium- to full-bodied, fleshy palate with juicy acids and powdery tannins. This has filled out with élevage in barrel and is already showing well. It's a blend of equal parts Merlot (mainly from parcels on sandy soils) and Cabernet Franc (old vines on sand and young vines on clay).
