Lots going on in the fruity finish. 65% merlot, 26% cabernet sauvignon and 9% cabernet franc. Drinkable but better after 2028.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

The 2022 Les Tourelles de Longueville has quite a floral bouquet, iris flower infusing the black fruit, with hints of cedar and graphite emerging with time. There is a coolness here. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit. The tannins feel polished, so that the finish is sleek, perhaps at the expense of a bit of tension. Overall, this is very fine. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting in London.

A Merlot-dominated blend of 65% Merlot, 26% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 9% Cabernet Franc, it’s already hard to resist yet should have 15+ years of prime drinking.
