The 2023 Les Tourelles de Longueville, the château’s Merlot-based blend, is plump, juicy and very easy to like. Plum, black cherry, mocha, new leather and dark spice flesh out effortlessly. Savory Cabernet top notes lend aromatic breadth on the explosive, layered finish. This is gorgeous stuff.

Varietal

Red Bordeaux

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act – the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Aromas of ground coffee, cassis, elderberries and hints of mushrooms and earth. Subtle and open, medium- to full-bodied, with expressive, succulent dark fruit and a touch of dark olives. The tannins are integrated and precise, adding balance and harmony to the fruit. 72% merlot, 20% cabernet sauvignon and 8% cabernet franc. Drink or hold.

Ripe black cherries, leafy tobacco, cedar pencil, and graphite all define the 2023 Les Tourelles De Pichon Baron, a Merlot-dominated blend (72% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 8% Cabernet Franc) that was aged 12 months in 30% new French oak. It's plump and round on the palate, with a supple, layered mouthfeel, soft tannins, and outstanding length. Drink this absolutely classic Pauillac over the coming 15+ years. There are roughly 10,600 cases produced. Drink 2026-2041.

The 2023 Les Tourelles de Longueville has turned out beautifully, offering aromas of perfectly ripe dark berries, spices, pencil shavings and fresh licorice. Medium- to full-bodied, dense and layered, it is structured by firm yet well-integrated tannins and a vibrant line of acidity that clearly reflects the vintage's character. While already balanced, it will benefit from three to four years in the cellar before opening.

This shows a little panache in the form of warmed cassis and plum compote flavors that show a generous edge. Flashes of bay, cedar and wet stone permeate throughout, giving this a broad, fleshy feel that’s a touch old school. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2037. 10,683 cases made.
