There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Close to equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot (there's a splash of Petit Verdot), the 2022 Pagodes De Cos sports a dense purple hue as well as a rocking nose of currants, blueberries, tobacco, and sweet oak. This rich, full-bodied, opulent second wine has plenty of mid-palate depth, a fleshy, sexy mouthfeel, and a great finish.

Juicy and sporting a fresh edge, this drives steeped red currant and cherry paste notes, injecting dried rose petal, singed alder and warm earth along the way. A late echo of game adds a final flirtation. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2036. 10,000 cases made, 3,000 cases imported.

The Wine Independent

This white from the team at Cos d’Estournel, from vineyards further north on the Médoc, is a blend of 74% Sauvignon Blanc and 36% Semillon, picked from August 29th, and bottled in September 2023. Aromatically it opens with powdered chalk, lemon peel and chamomile. The palate shows a fine sense of harmony, with a supple core of citrus and pear fruits, dusted with chalk and white pepper elements, supported by a firm phenolic grip and a modest but tangible acidity. Plenty of pithy grip in the finish with that acid profile suggests this could develop with age, but experience tells me that it may be better drunk young rather than older. The alcohol is 13.14%, with 13% on the label.

Aromas of crème de cassis, blackberries and cigar wrapper introduce the 2022 Les Pagodes de Cos, a full-bodied, rich and enveloping wine with a broad attack, lively acids and a firm, chewy finish. Like the grand vin, this is quite muscular and extracted in style, but it retains good balance.

The 2022 Les Pagodes de Cos does not quite deliver the same complexity as La Dame de Montrose on the nose: clean fruit, just a little predictable by comparison. The palate is medium-bodied with a sapid entry. Grippy and quite bold towards the liquorice-tinged finish, there is just a patina of herbaceousness on the aftertaste.
