Based on the 2018 vintage, complemented by reserve wines dating back to 2010, and disgorged in August 2023 with a dosage of four grams per liter, Doquet’s NV Rosé Premier Cru Anthocyanes is an equal blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that previously underwent 1.5 days of maceration, imparting its distinctive color. The wine reveals aromas evocative of red berries, plums, spices and licorice, followed by a medium- to full-bodied, rich and vinous palate framed by an enlivening, pillowy mousse.

The sparkling wines of Champagne have been revered by wine drinkers for hundreds of years, and even today they maintain their reputation for excellence of flavor and character, and are consistently associated with quality, decadence, and a cause for celebration. Their unique characteristics are partly due to the careful blending of a small number of selected grape varietals, most commonly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. These grapes, blended in fairly equal quantities, give the wines of Champagne their wonderful flavors and aromas, with the Pinot Noir offering length and backbone, and the Chardonnay varietal giving its acidity and dry, biscuity nature. It isn't unusual to sometimes see Champagne labeled as 'blanc de blanc', meaning it is made using only Chardonnay varietal grapes, or 'blanc de noir', which is made solely with Pinot Noir.

The beautiful rolling hillsides of the Champagne region of France have, for hundreds of years, been producing many of the world's most famous wines. The sparkling white wines to come out of Champagne's prestigious wineries have conquered the world, and are drank in celebration across the globe. The vast majority of the region is under vine, and grows predominantly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape varietals, which are usually blended together by master wine-makers in order to make their recognizable and widely loved produce. The north-easterly region of Champagne has a relatively cool climate, and quite a lot of rainfall, making it far from ideal for ripening grapes. However, the presence of heavily forested areas in the region helps maintain a balanced temperature, and the generations of expertise the wineries hold clearly produces excellent results in spite of the climatic problems.

Pale salmon-pink with aromas of sliced strawberries, citrus peel and rose petals. Some honey. It’s soft, creamy and elegant, with silky bubbles and a pretty, floral finish. 50% pinot noir and 50% chardonnay. From organically grown grapes. Drink now.

Winery Notes

This is a saignée rosé made in an innovative way. The pinot noir comes from a lieu dit in Vertus named “La Barre” and is macerated for 48 hours before pressing. It then goes into barrel for up to one year before it is blended with Vertus chardonnay for bottling. The final blend is 50% chardonnay and 50% pinot noir, all from 2016 harvest. It was disgorged with 3.5 grams MCR dosage. It’s not a sparkling red wine, as some saignée Champagnes have become, but it is intense in color and character; “anthocyanes” means pigment, after all. Raspberry, cinnamon spice and clove flavors are present in this rather full-bodied rosé Champagne.
