The 2024 Campiz Viejo is from a pago in El Puerto de Santa María that can be spelled Campiz, Campix or even Campin. Whatever the spelling, the unusual thing here is that one plot was planted six years ago with Vijiriega grapes, an old variety that has been recovered. It’s a variety that is a lot more aromatic and exuberant, with marked acidity and freshness. This fermented in chestnut barrels and matured with flor in Manzanilla casks for 10 months, which gave it a spicy twist, with notes of licorice and local character. It comes in at 11.5% alcohol with a 3.36 pH, 6.67 grams of acidity and a bone-dry finish. It’s vibrant and has floral notes, perfumed and attractive. This has a strong personality; it’s clean and expressive, and it really shines. The more time in the glass, the better. I love it. Bravo! 1,600 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2025.
