Long Term Pre-arrival Definition: Ordering wine directly through us from our supplier partners in Europe in advance of the item’s physical arrival in the US.
Long Term Pre-arrival sales ensure you’re getting the best possible price and that you have also secured the product before it hits the normal retail supply chain. The lead time for Pre-arrival goods is generally 4–8 months, sometimes longer based on supply chain and the logistics of transporting goods overseas. The expectation, from our team, is to communicate to the customer the location of their purchase every step of the way.
This product is offered as a full case purchase option, minimum order quantities may be applicable. When available, multiple case options will be presented. If you are purchasing a Pre-Arrival item you must order a solid case.
Rapid Ship
Items listed as "rapid ship" are in stock and available for immediate pickup or shipment. Those that do not have the "rapid ship" icon are housed with our supplier and must be transferred to our warehouse before they can be picked up or shipped. This requires 4-6 business days but usually occurs sooner. Some products will list both options of availability as there will be a certain number in stock, with the option to order additional bottles to be transferred from the supplier.

The Nebbiolo grape varietal is widely understood to be the fruit responsible for Italy's finest aged wines. However, its popularity and reliability as a grape which gives out outstanding flavors and aromas has led it to be planted in many countries around the world, with much success. These purple grapes are distinguishable by the fact that they take on a milky dust as they begin to reach maturity, leading many to claim that this is the reason for their unusual name, which means 'fog' in Italian. Nebbiolo grapes produce wines which have a wide range of beautiful and fascinating flavors, the most common of which are rich, dark and complex, such as violet, truffle, tobacco and prunes. They are generally aged for many years to balance out their characteristics, as their natural tannin levels tend to be very high.

There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. Grapes were first being grown and cultivated on Italian soil several thousand years ago by the Greeks and the Pheonicians, who named Italy 'Oenotria' – the land of wines – so impressed were they with the climate and the suitability of the soil for wine production. Of course, it was the rise of the Roman Empire which had the most lasting influence on wine production in Italy, and their influence can still be felt today, as much of the riches of the empire came about through their enthusiasm for producing wines and exporting it to neighbouring countries. Since those times, a vast amount of Italian land has remained primarily for vine cultivation, and thousands of wineries can be found throughout the entire length and breadth of this beautiful country, drenched in Mediterranean sunshine and benefiting from the excellent fertile soils found there. Italy remains very much a 'land of wines', and one could not imagine this country, its landscape and culture, without it.

Piedmont
Situated in the north-western part of Italy, the region of Piedmont is known worldwide and is highly respected for the quality of the wines produced there. Many of the most successful sub-regions in Piedmont produce many of the world's finest red wines, such as those made from the excellent Nebbiolo grape varietal in areas such as Barolo and Barbaresco. However, the historic wineries which typify this region use a relatively wide variety of grapes, including Dolcetto and Barbera for their red wines, which are typically aged and have a delightful velvety character. Piedmont isn't all about beautifully complex red wines, though, as it is also famed for high quality, elegant sparkling wines, notably the Asti wines made with the white Moscato grape. The region benefits from a range of terroirs which are often well expressed in the sparkling wines, and a wonderfully consistent climate ideal for vineyard cultivation.

Barolo’s star grape is Nebbiolo, a finicky yet expressive variety that reaches its zenith this unique terroir. The region’s distinct microclimates and soils contribute to Nebbiolo’s complexity, resulting in wines with robust tannins, high acidity, and exceptional aging potential. Barolo wines, often referred to as “the king of wines,” are characterized by their deep garnet hue and complex bouquet, offering aromas of roses, tar, truffles, and red fruit. The aging process is significant, requiring at least 38 months, with a minimum of 18 months spent in wooden casks. This meticulous craftsmanship results in wines that evolve beautifully over time, displaying a harmonious balance of power and finesse. Here is a first taste of a new wine from Pio Cesare following the estate's acquisition of vines in the Mosconi cru of Monforte d'Alba a few years back. The 2015 Barolo Mosconi opens to a less complicated bouquet with steady and clean aromas of wild berry, balsam or grilled herb and crushed stone. My sample did take a little extra time to open, but once it did, the wine presented all the detailed and nuanced characteristics of the grape with pinpoint precision. It's great to welcome a new wine to the greater Barolo family. Only 5,000 bottles were made.

All it takes is a few swirls of the glass to release aromas of pressed rose, pine, botanical herbs, graphite and whiffs of pipe tobacco. Firmly structured, the palate also has finesse, delivering dried cherry, pomegranate, licorice and hints of coffee bean alongside fine-grained tannins. A great showing for this debut vintage. Hold for even more complexity. Drink 2022–2030.

Pio Cesare's newest wine, this is produced from the recently purchased Mosconi vineyard in Monforte d'Alba. The sale went through just a few days before Pio Boffa's 60th birthday, and 30 years after the first release of the estate's original single-vineyard Barolo, Ornato.Originally purchased to enrich the 'classic' Barolo, the wine Mosconi's old vines - dating back to 1947 and 1971 - produced was deemed exceptional enough that Pio Cesare decided to make it into a standalone wine. Unlike most of Pio Cesare's other reds, this spends the majority of time in barrique rather than botti, which seems to suit its powerful personality.It has a red hedgerow fruit aroma with a touch of orange peel and a savoury edge. The palate has good density with very fine tannins, combined with very fresh acidity and rich, plummy fruits with some cedary notes. It's lighter than the denser Ornato showing more red fruit, but, like its sibling is surprisingly light on its feet for such a substantial wine. It finishes with a lovely lick of sweet, elegant cherry fruit and a touch of woody vanilla. A very good first attempt, I expect we will see the estate refining the recipe for this wine over the next few vintages.

The first vintage for this new cuvée, the 2015 Barolo Mosconi comes from the Monforte d’Alba vineyard and there are just over 400 cases produced, with 300 magnums. Burgundian ripe red currants, flowers, spice, and loamy earth characteristics give way to a medium-bodied, beautifully textured Barolo that has grippy tannins, solid mid-palate depth, and a medium-bodied, silky mouthfeel. Give it 2-4 years and enjoy over the following two decades.
