Like a stallion out of the gate, this shows an initial explosion of power, in the form of mouthwatering flavors and fine texture, before quickly settling into an elegant gait. The racy acidity is seamlessly knit, buoying the lacy mousse and flavors of cassis, toasted brioche and tangerine, with accents of candied ginger, hazelnut and fleur de sel lingering on the long, creamy finish. Drink now through 2035. 2,000 cases imported.

The sparkling wines of Champagne have been revered by wine drinkers for hundreds of years, and even today they maintain their reputation for excellence of flavor and character, and are consistently associated with quality, decadence, and a cause for celebration. Their unique characteristics are partly due to the careful blending of a small number of selected grape varietals, most commonly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. These grapes, blended in fairly equal quantities, give the wines of Champagne their wonderful flavors and aromas, with the Pinot Noir offering length and backbone, and the Chardonnay varietal giving its acidity and dry, biscuity nature. It isn't unusual to sometimes see Champagne labeled as 'blanc de blanc', meaning it is made using only Chardonnay varietal grapes, or 'blanc de noir', which is made solely with Pinot Noir.

The beautiful rolling hillsides of the Champagne region of France have, for hundreds of years, been producing many of the world's most famous wines. The sparkling white wines to come out of Champagne's prestigious wineries have conquered the world, and are drank in celebration across the globe. The vast majority of the region is under vine, and grows predominantly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape varietals, which are usually blended together by master wine-makers in order to make their recognizable and widely loved produce. The north-easterly region of Champagne has a relatively cool climate, and quite a lot of rainfall, making it far from ideal for ripening grapes. However, the presence of heavily forested areas in the region helps maintain a balanced temperature, and the generations of expertise the wineries hold clearly produces excellent results in spite of the climatic problems.

The 2008 Champagne Rare is luxurious with aromas of graham cracker, honeysuckle, quince, and orange zest. It is round and opulent, with a fine and pillowy mousse, and retains freshness throughout, with apricot and yellow flowers. It is impressive and long, and fully luxurious. Drinking well now, it is sure to hold its own for years to come. Drink 2022-2044.

On opening, it shows a strict, minerally face - a good reminder of just how long-lived this wine will be. Given an hour in the glass, it begins to unfold, revealing real complexity and depth. The fruit leans towards green apple, yellow pear and subtle tropical touches of pineapple and lychee, before brioche and a gentle coffee note join in with further air. Pure power and concentration, with a structure that will only gain in detail and finesse over time.

Disgorged in June 2022 with a dosage of nine grams per liter, the 2008 Rare Millésime—tasted from bottle three years post-disgorgement—is stepping into its true enjoyment window. It opens with aromas of lemon oil, burnt buttered toast and roasted pineapple with a deft touch of smoky reduction. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, taut and comparatively lean relative to the 2012 and 2006 renditions, driven by an incisive spine of acidity and pillowy mousse but offering less in the way of texture. Stylistically akin to the 2013 but with cloudier skies and cooler nights contributing to an even more chiseled profile, yet simultaneously to a lower maturity.
