A chip off the (40-year-old) block, Quinta do Noval’s 20-year-old has excellent structure and drive. Together with the fresh acidity, heady yet controlled Cognac-like spirit harmoniously buoys its orange peel, dried apricot, honey and marzipan flavours. Saline, café crème notes and a woody walnut timbre lend a balancing savouriness to the long and precise finish. 117.5g/L of residual sugar. Drinking Window 2020 – 2030.

Benefiting from both the hot, dry Iberian climate as well as brisk Atlantic winds, Portugal is a perfectly situated country for vineyard cultivation and wine production. With a wine making history which stretches back thousands of years, it comes as little surprise that wine plays an important role in the cultural identity and practices of the country. The Phoenicians, the Carthaginians, the Greeks and the Romans all had a hand in forming Portugal as an important center for wine production, and over the millennia, this resulted in each region of this beautiful part of Europe producing its own distinctive wines easily identifiable and separate from neighboring Spain's. Today, the varied terroir and climate across Portugal allows a great range of wines to be made each year, from the fresh and dry Vinho Verde wines to the famous and widely drunk fortified Port wines, and many in between.

The magnificent city of Porto - the capital of Portugal - is located near the mouth of the beautiful Douro river, in the beating heart of the Douro wine region. The Douro region has been regarded as one of the most important viticultural region of Europe for several centuries, and was the third region to be officially recognized and protected as a wine region, with laws having been passed in the mid 18th century regarding its status. Porto is, of course, most famous for the production of Port wine, an aromatic and slightly viscous tawny colored fortified wine, with a fascinating history of seafaring, experimentation and innovation. The vineyards used in the region for the production of Porto's wines contain up to a hundred different grape varietals, resulting in the wide range of Port wines on offer today.

This layered, complex, rich and detailed Port is delicious, vibrant and sweet, packed with hazelnut, honey, maple, caramel and dried apricot flavors that linger for minutes on the finish. Blended from a core of 20-year-old casks with older and younger ones to express the sophisticated house style. Drink or hold.

The NV 20 Year Old Tawny Port was bottled in 2016 with a bar-top cork and 132 grams per liter of residual sugar. Gloriously fresh and completely alive, this adds an extra layer of depth and concentration of flavor to the 10 Year Old, of course, but that's not the main attraction here. This has all of Noval's typical grace and elegance while the complexity level is nicely above average. Then, its bright demeanor makes its fruit lifted and drives the medley of flavors home. It persists nicely, becoming something to contemplate as well as enjoy. This is a bit on the pricey side for a 20, at least judging from the list price, but it was also one of my favorites here. I don't want to be a broken record, but remember that aged tawnies should be drunk a bit cool. This was brilliant around 58-60 degrees Fahrenheit, boring around 72.

An enticing version, with wood spice and cinnamon leading off, followed by racy notes of hazelnut, walnut husk, dried cherry and green tea, plus a lingering incense detail. Shows nice range. Drink now.

Winery Notes

The wine displays classic Tawny color, with golden highlights, and an ethereal bouquet, typical of Noval Tawny ports. Elegant, velvety and concentrated on the palate, it has an attractive, complex, and lingering finish. After the 10 Year Old, it shows increasing characteristics of nuts, dried fruits and spices, as well as increasing complexity.
