Varietal Pinot Noir

Regularly described as being the grape varietal responsible for producing the world's most romantic wines, Pinot Noir has long been associated with elegance and a broad range of flavors The name means 'black pine' in French, and this is due to the fact that the fruit of this particular varietal is especially dark in color, and hangs in a conical shape, like that of a pine cone. Despite being grown today in almost every wine producing country, Pinot Noir is a notoriously difficult grape variety to cultivate. This is because it is especially susceptible to various forms of mold and mildew, and thrives best in steady, cooler climates. However, the quality of the fruit has ensured that wineries and vintners have persevered with the varietal, and new technologies and methods have overcome many of the problems it presents. Alongside this, the wide popularity and enthusiasm for this grape has ensured it will remain a firm favorite amongst wine drinkers for many years to come.

Country United States

Of all the New World wine countries, perhaps the one which has demonstrated the most flair for producing high quality wines - using a combination of traditional and forward-thinking contemporary methods - has been the United States of America. Ample spice, herbes de Provence, Bing cherry, and pomegranate notes emerge from the 2016 Pinot Noir Bearwallow Vineyard. It’s medium-bodied, fresh, and nicely focused, with the more savory, mineral style of the Anderson Valley front and center. It has good structure yet is also accessible. It should drink nicely for a decade.

The most approachable of Rhys' vineyard-designate Pinot Noirs, the 2016 Pinot Noir Bearwallow Vineyard offers up expressive aromas of black plums, wild berries, peonies and rich soil. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it's supple and layered, with a juicy core of crunchy fruit, succulent acids and lovely declination. Already integrated and giving, drink it over the next decade or more.

• Practicing Biodynamic. • 100% Pinot Noir. • Bearwallow Vineyard (Anderson Valley AVA.) • The vines are a Rhys Selection Massale Pinot Noir. The elevation is 300?-600?. • Wolfey-Bearwallow Series – 10”-25” topsoil over deep fractured shale. • Hand-harvested. • Native yeast fermentation. • Grapes go through 5 day cold soak and then fermentation begins. The wine is foot trodden twice a day during fermentation. • Aged 18 months in in 5% new French oak, 15 of those months the wine is aged on the lees.
