Varietal

Champagne Blend

The sparkling wines of Champagne have been revered by wine drinkers for hundreds of years, and even today they maintain their reputation for excellence of flavor and character, and are consistently associated with quality, decadence, and a cause for celebration. Their unique characteristics are partly due to the careful blending of a small number of selected grape varietals, most commonly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. These grapes, blended in fairly equal quantities, give the wines of Champagne their wonderful flavors and aromas, with the Pinot Noir offering length and backbone, and the Chardonnay varietal giving its acidity and dry, biscuity nature. It isn't unusual to sometimes see Champagne labeled as 'blanc de blanc', meaning it is made using only Chardonnay varietal grapes, or 'blanc de noir', which is made solely with Pinot Noir.

Region

Champagne

The beautiful rolling hillsides of the Champagne region of France have, for hundreds of years, been producing many of the world's most famous wines. The sparkling white wines to come out of Champagne's prestigious wineries have conquered the world, and are drank in celebration across the globe. The vast majority of the region is under vine, and grows predominantly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape varietals, which are usually blended together by master wine-makers in order to make their recognizable and widely loved produce. The north-easterly region of Champagne has a relatively cool climate, and quite a lot of rainfall, making it far from ideal for ripening grapes. However, the presence of heavily forested areas in the region helps maintain a balanced temperature, and the generations of expertise the wineries hold clearly produces excellent results in spite of the climatic problems.

WE 100pts

Wine Enthusiast

This new release from a great vintage for Chardonnay in Champagne is a perfect blanc de blancs, showing a wealth of intensity from the crisp, chalky, mineral tones to the perfumed apple notes. The aromas hint at developing toastiness that adds depth and complexity. The wine is still young and it will age for years. Drink from 2020. (Cellar Selection)

James Suckling

No doubting the pedigree or provenance, this opens with wet chalk and oyster shell notes, and there are aromas of dried yellow flowers and white mushrooms, white chocolate and lemon citrus as well as a refined array of fresh pastry. The palate has power with ripe lemon-drenched peach fruits. This is generous and gives plenty for Salon at this young stage with really succulent fruit. Builds white almond biscuit and toasted spices through the finish. Drink now.

VM 97pts

Vinous Media

The 2006 Cuvée S is powerful, dense and imposing. All of the natural intensity of this warm year races across the palate. Orchard fruit, jasmine, dried flowers and soaring tropical overtones fill out the layers. The 2006 is exceptionally beautiful today, but it also has a ton of room to grow.

The 2006 Brut Blanc De Blancs Le Mesnil is still closed and backward, but wow, it has incredible potential. Showing the more ripe, concentrated style of the vintage in its orchard/citrus fruits and chalky minerality, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, brilliant purity, elegant, bright acidity, and a big finish. It’s a big, layered, structured Salon that needs to be forgotten for 4-5 years, but it’s going to drink beautifully for two decades.

WA 95pts

Wine Advocate

The 2006 Blanc de Blancs Le Mesnil Brut is quite tangy and reserved by the standards of this sunny, demonstrative vintage. Offering up aromas of smoke, toasted bread, orange oil, mocha and confit lemon, it's medium to full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping, with racy acids and a concentrated, surprisingly structured mid-palate. Concluding with a long and gently empyreumatic finish, this is a fine success. This bottle was disgorged in January 2019.

WS 95pts

Wine Spectator

The creamy mousse of this graceful Champagne caresses the palate like cashmere, carrying a beautiful range of glazed nectarine, chopped almond, pastry and candied ginger flavors framed by vivid acidity. Seamless, with a long, lasting finish accented by minerally chalk and saline notes. Drink now through 2031.

BH 95pts

Burghound

A distinctly cool yet ripe nose features prominent notes of yeast and citrus along with more subtle hints of citrus, especially lime, toast, Granny Smith apple and a whiff of quinine. There is good volume to the super-sleek, delicious and almost painfully intense medium weight flavors that conclude in a chalky and very dry finale that is less austere than it usually is at this stage of its development. The supporting mousse is, as is typically the case, quite fine but decidedly firm. Not surprisingly at only 20 years of age, and in magnum format, this beauty is still on the way up yet it isn’t so backward that, if you’re lucky enough to have one or more of these in your cellar, it couldn’t be enjoyed now. Excellent.
