The name of this grape, meaning 'blood of Jove' conjures up evocative images of long dead civilizations, and gives the Sangiovese varietal a sense of the holy, the sacred, the special. Indeed, this particular type of Italian grape has been cultivated and processed for thousands of years, and is said to be the original favorite grape varietal of the Romans, and the Etruscans before them. Throughout history, vintners have continued to plant this varietal, and they continue to produce wonderful wines to this day. The long bunches of very dark, round fruit are treasured by fine wineries in Italy and a few other places around the world, and when young, these grapes are lively â€“ full of strawberry flavors and a little spiciness. However, it is when they are aged in oak that they take on some truly special flavors and aromas, as seen in some of the finest wines of the Old World.

There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. A bit shy initially, the San Filippo 2021 Brunello di Montalcino Comunali is crisp and bright, showing a simple, transparent Sangiovese character underlined by wild berry fruit and vibrant acidity. Medium- to full-bodied in texture with greater power expressed through length rather than weight, the wine settles into elegant aromas of crushed stone, white pepper and wild rose. It feels light and streamlined on the palate with drying tannins, again driven by the lift of that bright acidity. The Comunali name reflects a blend of estate parcels across Montalcino.

Distinguishing itself from San Filippo’s Le Lucère bottling, Comunali comes from the estate’s lower plots. It brings together 50-year-old vines with newer plantings established in 2012 and 2016 to take advantage of the gentle northeast exposure. A vibrant, rather fruity nose of strawberry is accented by liquorice and spicy green peppercorn. Tannins are suede-like from the start. Purple, almost grapey fruit sports a glossy, candied sheen. Hefty but lightened by fresh acidity, while this might seem a bit naive at the moment, age could lend some wisdom.

The 2021 Brunello di Montalcino Comunali evolves in the glass with a blend of crushed blueberries and cherries complemented by citrusy spice. It is fruit-forward, with masses of wild berry concentration supported by juicy acidity as violet inner florals resonate. Lightly tannic, it leaves a dark chocolate tinge and a slightly chewy sensation, finishing with admirable length.
