Sangiovese

The name of this grape, meaning 'blood of Jove' conjures up evocative images of long dead civilizations, and gives the Sangiovese varietal a sense of the holy, the sacred, the special. Indeed, this particular type of Italian grape has been cultivated and processed for thousands of years, and is said to be the original favorite grape varietal of the Romans, and the Etruscans before them. Throughout history, vintners have continued to plant this varietal, and they continue to produce wonderful wines to this day. The long bunches of very dark, round fruit are treasured by fine wineries in Italy and a few other places around the world, and when young, these grapes are lively â€“ full of strawberry flavors and a little spiciness. However, it is when they are aged in oak that they take on some truly special flavors and aromas, as seen in some of the finest wines of the Old World.

There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. Despite the heat the vintage, the wine walks a fine line between balance and power, but it doesn't feel too heavy or extracted in terms of structure. Production is 5,800 bottles.

Just west of the town of Montalcino, Scopetone’s vineyards reach almost 500 metres above sea level, overlooking the hallowed hill of Montosoli. The estate has been under the care of Loredana Tanganelli and Antonio Brandi since 2009 and the 2017 is a pretty and discreet wine that belies the vintage. Earth and forest berries are nuanced by touches of leather and tobacco. Pure, sweet fruit on palate suggests pomegranate and currants, allied to sturdy tannins and depth of flavour. A lightness of texture gives lovely drinkability. Transparent and sincere. Drinking Window 2022 - 2028.

Winery Notes

•100% Sangiovese. •Calcareous clay soils. •Fermentation and maceration on the skins occurs over the course of 15 days in steel vats. •Aged in medium size (30 hl) oak casks for 36 months followed by 12 months in glazed cement vats, plus 4 months in bottle.
