Greco Bianco

Greco Bianco is an ancient white grape variety primarily grown in southern Italy, especially in Calabria and Campania, where it produces the esteemed Greco di Tufo DOCG. Its name reflects its Greek origins, as the grape is believed to have been brought to Italy over 2,500 years ago by Greek settlers. What makes Greco Bianco unique is its rich texture, aromatic intensity, and ability to age gracefully. It produces full-bodied wines with naturally high acidity, offering a balance of freshness and structure. Typical flavors include ripe stone fruits (peach, apricot), citrus, almond, and floral notes, often accompanied by a distinctive minerality derived from the volcanic soils of Campania. Of course, it was the rise of the Roman Empire which had the most lasting influence on wine production in Italy, and their influence can still be felt today, as much of the riches of the empire came about through their enthusiasm for producing wines and exporting it to neighbouring countries. Since those times, a vast amount of Italian land has remained primarily for vine cultivation, and thousands of wineries can be found throughout the entire length and breadth of this beautiful country, drenched in Mediterranean sunshine and benefiting from the excellent fertile soils found there. Italy remains very much a 'land of wines', and one could not imagine this country, its landscape and culture, without it.

The beautiful region of Campania, located in the 'shin' of Italy's boot, has been an important center for viticulture and wine making for thousands of years. Indeed, archaeologists believe that wine making was happening in Campania as long ago as 1,200 BCE, making this one of the oldest wine regions on earth. By the time the Roman Empire starting expanding, Campania became the world's most important wine producing region, and the hundred or so native grape varietals which flourish in the mineral rich soils near the coast became the key ingredient in many of Rome's legendary classical wines. Today, the wine industry in Campania is booming once more, following a drop in the region's reputation in the 1970s, and is gaining awards, recognition and new fans each year.

Packaged in a special squat, rounded bottle, the Tenute Capaldo 2021 Greco di Tufo Riserva Goleto stands tall with a good mix of aromas that add extra complexity and depth. There are fleshy fruit notes that recall peach and pear, but the wine also introduces well-managed tones of toasted nut and spice from aging in tonneaux and amphorae. There is pretty textural creaminess to close. Production is 11,995 bottles.

Winery Notes

Greco grapes originate from selected vines within a 2,5 ha parcel in the San Paolo area – within Tufo town – and namely in the contrade Cicogna, Laura e Nassano. Here the vineyards, over 30 years old, grow near to sulphureous mines and are cultivated following different historic methods, still largely preserved. Harvest is done by hand and generally happens between the first and the second week of October, depending on vintage characteristics. Fermentation happens in stainless steel tanks; then, for the following year, 80% of the cuvee is aged in gently roasted tonneaux and the remaining 20% in amphora. Then, for another year, the wine rests in the bottle before release.
