Varietal

Sauvignon Blanc

The green skinned grapes of the Sauvignon Blanc varietal had their origins in Southern France, where they are still widely grown and used for many of the excellent young and aged white wines the region is famous for. Today, however, they are grown in almost every wine producing country in the world, and are widely revered for their fresh and grassy flavors, full of tropical notes and refreshing, zesty character. Sauvignon Blanc grapes thrive best in moderate climates, and ripen relatively early in the year. This has made them a favorite for many wineries in the New World, where they can still produce healthy and high yields in the earlier part of the summer before the temperatures become too hot. Too much heat has a massively adverse effect on Sauvignon Blanc, as the grapes become dull in their flavor, and the wine produced from them loses all its unique character and high points. As such, Sauvignon Blanc farmers have had a lot of trouble from global warming and climate change, as they are being forced to harvest their crops increasingly earlier in the year when it is cool enough to do so.

Country

Italy

There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. Grapes were first being grown and cultivated on Italian soil several thousand years ago by the Greeks and the Pheonicians, who named Italy 'Oenotria' – the land of wines – so impressed were they with the climate and the suitability of the soil for wine production. Of course, it was the rise of the Roman Empire which had the most lasting influence on wine production in Italy, and their influence can still be felt today, as much of the riches of the empire came about through their enthusiasm for producing wines and exporting it to neighbouring countries. Since those times, a vast amount of Italian land has remained primarily for vine cultivation, and thousands of wineries can be found throughout the entire length and breadth of this beautiful country, drenched in Mediterranean sunshine and benefiting from the excellent fertile soils found there. Italy remains very much a 'land of wines', and one could not imagine this country, its landscape and culture, without it.

Region

Trentino/Alto Adige

As the name suggests, the northern Italian wine region of Trentino-Alto Adige is made up of two separate areas, with Trento in the south, and the Adige river in the north. There are few parts of Italy quite as alluring for wine fans as Trentino-Alto Adige, as this is an area in which Italian wines become really quite unique and surprising. As the region is nestled in the foothills of the Italian Alps, it is quite a long way from the sun drenched islands of the south, or the rolling hillsides of central Italy. Indeed, the wines of Trentino-Alto Adige are packed full of fresh, vibrant alpine flavors and aromas, and are as influenced by the Germanic styles of wine making as they are influenced by those of the Italians, making the wines of this region really quite unusual, and utterly captivating. Wineries in Trentino-Alto Adige use both native and imported grape varietals for their wines, and they are generally considered to be amongst the finest in Italy.

Bursting with white peach and lifted floral aromatics which cascade over the juicy, lemon peel acidity and lustrous silky texture. Beautifully elegant and very long. (Gold) - DWWA 2024

Wine Spectator

A lovely, well-knit white, plushly creamy but vibrant with vivid acidity and a racy tang of salinity, this offers flavors of baked white peach, grapefruit peel, wild strawberry and fresh tarragon that expand than linger through the long, sleek finish. Sauvignon Blanc. Drink now through 2029. 2,000 cases made.

Rich nose with notes of cooked lemons, sliced apples, savory herbs and flowers. Medium-bodied with a creamy texture. Sleek and juicy with vivid acidity. A nicely crafted, layered and complex sauvignon blanc. Drink or hold.

Vinous Media

The 2021 Sauvignon Blanc Riserva Vigna Rachtl opens with an airy freshness, far less spicy and pungent than a typical Alto Adige Sauvignon. A delicate blend of dried flowers and minty herbs accentuated green apple aromas. This is ripe in style and soothingly round with white pit fruits and spices, yet I crave more depth for a Riserva-level wine. The 2021 finishes spicy with a saline tinge, leaving the mouth watering for more. Considering the price point, I expect much more from the Vigna Rachtl.
