Frappato

Frappato is a red grape variety native to Sicily, particularly associated with the southeastern region around the town of Vittoria. It produces wines that are light-bodied, aromatic, and known for their bright acidity. Frappato wines typically exhibit flavors of red berries such as raspberry and strawberry, along with floral notes of violet and a hint of spice. They are characterized by their soft tannins and refreshing, juicy character, making them ideal for early consumption. What makes Frappato unique is its role in Sicilian winemaking, where it is often blended with Nero d'Avola to create Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG wines, the only DOCG in Sicily. Frappato's fruity and floral profile adds elegance and freshness to the blend, showcasing the grape's ability to reflect Sicily's sunny climate and limestone-rich soils. Frappato wines pair well with Mediterranean cuisine, grilled vegetables, and lighter pasta dishes, offering a taste of Sicilian terroir and tradition.

Since those times, a vast amount of Italian land has remained primarily for vine cultivation, and thousands of wineries can be found throughout the entire length and breadth of this beautiful country, drenched in Mediterranean sunshine and benefiting from the excellent fertile soils found there. Italy remains very much a 'land of wines', and one could not imagine this country, its landscape and culture, without it.

The beautiful island of Sicily has been growing grapevines and producing wines for thousands of years, ever since the ancient Greeks first landed on its golden shores and noticed the island's true potential as a haven for quality grapes. Today, the island is one of Italy's primary wine regions, and even though over eighty percent of Sicily's grapevines are used for the production of sweet fortified wines, the remaining wineries making other wine styles are renowned around the world for their quality and character. Indeed, Sicilian wineries are famed for their ability to capture something of the sun-drenched region in their wines, and the vines they cultivate benefit enormously from the almost constant sunshine and the incredibly fertile volcanic soils which typify the island.

The 2023 Frappato Vigna Biddine Sottana blossoms in the glass with a delicate blend of violets, roses and crushed wild blueberries. It's soothingly round and nearly juicy in feel, yet it maintains refinement as a wave of ripe red and blue fruits cascades across a tactile tinge of minerality. Gently grippy tannins linger as the 2023 tapers off remarkably fresh and neatly structured. Crunchy tannins frame the experience without slowing its momentum.

This is a new wine from Valle dell'Acate that aims to underline the character of the Frappato grape, the protagonist of winemaking in Vittoria, Sicily. The organic 2023 Sicilia Vittoria Frappato Vigna Biddine Sottana is made in stainless steel only, and this 1.9-hectare vineyard has black soils with white rocks and is especially rich in silt and organic matter. Despite the vintage heat and mildew disease pressure, this wine reveals a focused personality with bright fruit, candied cherry and blackcurrant. There is a hint of sweetness and an aroma that reminds me of raw honey or beeswax, but all in all, this wine achieves good balance over a medium-weight texture. Production is 6,000 bottles.

Color: Deep ruby red with purple reflections. Bouquet: Complex and rich in hints of red fruits, ripe blackberries and raspberries, rose flowers. Taste: Fresh, aromatic and structured, small red fruits and notes of jam emerge in the aftertaste, finish with the right amount of tannins and a long finish. Pairings: Aperitifs based on fresh and mature cheeses, cured meats, marinated and tataki Sicilian red tuna, swordfish roll.
