The NV Brut Nature Blanc de Blancs Premier Cru is another highlight in this range from Veuve Fourny & Fils. Dried flowers, herbs and dried orchard fruit confer tons of bright, savory intensity to play off the wine’s decidedly phenolic feel. There’s terrific palate presence and structure here, not to mention the complexity to make this an extremely versatile Champagne for the dinner table. I loved it. Lot 72451. Disgorged: November 2024.

Varietal

Champagne Blend

The sparkling wines of Champagne have been revered by wine drinkers for hundreds of years, and even today they maintain their reputation for excellence of flavor and character, and are consistently associated with quality, decadence, and a cause for celebration. Their unique characteristics are partly due to the careful blending of a small number of selected grape varietals, most commonly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. These grapes, blended in fairly equal quantities, give the wines of Champagne their wonderful flavors and aromas, with the Pinot Noir offering length and backbone, and the Chardonnay varietal giving its acidity and dry, biscuity nature. It isn't unusual to sometimes see Champagne labeled as 'blanc de blanc', meaning it is made using only Chardonnay varietal grapes, or 'blanc de noir', which is made solely with Pinot Noir.

Region

Champagne

The beautiful rolling hillsides of the Champagne region of France have, for hundreds of years, been producing many of the world's most famous wines. The sparkling white wines to come out of Champagne's prestigious wineries have conquered the world, and are drank in celebration across the globe. The vast majority of the region is under vine, and grows predominantly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape varietals, which are usually blended together by master wine-makers in order to make their recognizable and widely loved produce. The north-easterly region of Champagne has a relatively cool climate, and quite a lot of rainfall, making it far from ideal for ripening grapes. However, the presence of heavily forested areas in the region helps maintain a balanced temperature, and the generations of expertise the wineries hold clearly produces excellent results in spite of the climatic problems.

James Suckling

A seductive blanc de blancs, precise and refined, showing aromas of sliced apples, butter cookies and salted lemons. Medium-bodied with crisp acidity and thin bubbles. Fresh, balanced and textural. Delicious finish. Drink or hold.

Wine & Spirits

The Fourny brothers farm close to four acres of 60-year-old chardonnay vines for this Brut Nature, aging it on the lees for 30 months. They present it without dosage, allowing the deep flavors to show in all their brisk intensity. It feels youthful, with notes of lemon, pear and chalk in mouthwatering tension. A clean, fresh Champagne to enjoy with raw shellfish, or to cellar for several years.

Wine Advocate

The NV Brut Blanc de Blancs Premier Cru Nature is 100% Chardonnay bottled with no dosage. It is a gorgeous, striking wine endowed with layers of pure, crystalline fruit. Mint, flower, sweet herbs and minerals are some of the notes that meld together on the seamless finish. This is a pure, utterly impeccable wine.

Burghound

This too is beautifully elegant with strikingly well-layered aromas of pungent yeast, quinine, green apple and a whisper of petrol. This impression of refinement is enhanced by the notably fine mousse supporting the middle weight flavors that culminate in a crisp, citrusy and youthfully austere finish. This could easily be enjoyed now but I would be inclined to hold it for at least another 2 to 3 years first.

Wine Spectator

Bright and well-balanced, this is satiny in texture, with the mousse and mouthwatering acidity carrying flavors of pear tart, lime blossom and candied ginger. Offers a crunchy, smoke-tinged finish.

Winery Notes

Made only from Chardonnay Vieilles Vignes which is harvested by hand, Brut Nature is a champagne with no dosage. In harmony with its citrus notes, finesse, fruity and balanced palate, it is bursting with intensity and freshness. It will bring out the richness and diversity of seafood at the start of any meal.
