More like a light red with fine bubbles in the mouth. It’s medium- to full-bodied with plenty of dried strawberries, mineral, nutmeg and spices with ginseng. Orange peel. A blend of 65% pinot noir, 15% chardonnay and 20% pinot meunier.

The sparkling wines of Champagne have been revered by wine drinkers for hundreds of years, and even today they maintain their reputation for excellence of flavor and character, and are consistently associated with quality, decadence, and a cause for celebration. Their unique characteristics are partly due to the careful blending of a small number of selected grape varietals, most commonly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. These grapes, blended in fairly equal quantities, give the wines of Champagne their wonderful flavors and aromas, with the Pinot Noir offering length and backbone, and the Chardonnay varietal giving its acidity and dry, biscuity nature. It isn't unusual to sometimes see Champagne labeled as 'blanc de blanc', meaning it is made using only Chardonnay varietal grapes, or 'blanc de noir', which is made solely with Pinot Noir.

The beautiful rolling hillsides of the Champagne region of France have, for hundreds of years, been producing many of the world's most famous wines. The sparkling white wines to come out of Champagne's prestigious wineries have conquered the world, and are drank in celebration across the globe. The vast majority of the region is under vine, and grows predominantly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape varietals, which are usually blended together by master wine-makers in order to make their recognizable and widely loved produce. The north-easterly region of Champagne has a relatively cool climate, and quite a lot of rainfall, making it far from ideal for ripening grapes. However, the presence of heavily forested areas in the region helps maintain a balanced temperature, and the generations of expertise the wineries hold clearly produces excellent results in spite of the climatic problems.

Based primarily on the 2022 vintage and incorporating 10% reserve wines from 2021 along with 20% from the perpetual reserve, Pouillon’s latest NV Grande Vallée is sourced from five communes within the Vallée de la Marne—Avenay-Val-d'Or, Épernay, Festigny, Mareuil-sur-Aÿ and Mutigny. This Pinot Noir-dominant blend is complemented by 20% Pinot Meunier and 15% Chardonnay. Disgorged in October 2024 with a dosage of two grams per liter, it unfurls in the glass with aromas of orange zest, ripe pear, hazelnut and spices. Medium- to full-bodied, it is both fleshy and precise, with ripe but vibrant acidity, a pillowy mousse and a long, sapid finish. Observant tasters will note that beginning with the 2019 base, Grande Vallée has replaced Brut Réserve, exemplifying Fabrice Pouillon’s emphasis on precision and detail.

Golden color leads onto an earthy, expansive nose that has an overtone of ripe red bell pepper and juicy plum, with an oxidative edge from wood ageing. The palate is lighter than either color or nose suggest, flowing with inherent juiciness on a body that has traction and Pinot structure, but also bright freshness. Individual and surprisingly light.

Winery Notes

Each year this is a blend of crus from all of Pouillon’s holdings and is composed of roughly 65% pinot noir, 20% pinot meunier, and 15% chardonnay. This cuvée has evolved over time and improved in quality to better reflect the evolution of the domaine at large. Formerly known as "Réserve Brut", the "Grande Vallée" cuvée is fermented with native yeasts, half in neutral barrique and half fermented in enameled tank. Elevage continues a minimum of 6-8 months before the wine is is blended with the previous vintage and the "perpetual cuvée" to be refermented in bottle utilizing unfermented grape juice from the same vineyards as its sugar source.
