This black skinned grape has been used for wine making for centuries, with several ancient civilizations noticing the fact that it is highly versatile and holds some delicious flavors and aromas, perfect for those looking for a powerful yet elegant grape for their wines. Tempranillo often causes winemakers some trouble, however, as it is highly susceptible to many diseases. Despite this, plenty continue to persevere with this varietal, as it is perfect for producing delicious and complex single variety and blended wines, packed full of classic Spanish flavors and plenty of aromatic and intense surprises.

The climatic conditions allow the fine grape varietals to reach full ripeness and express plenty of the best features of their terroir, making La Rioja wines some of the most interesting to have ever come out of Europe. The Cantabrian mountains to the north provide the perfect shelter from the colder, wetter influences of the Atlantic oceans, and in the beloved vineyards of La Rioja, wineries have been cultivating exceedingly flavorful Tempranillo grapes for generations for the inclusion in their fine single variety and blended wines.

The single-vineyard Tempranillo 2023 La Nieta comes from the 1.75-hectare vineyard that names the wine. It was planted in 1975 on silt, clay and sandstone soils in Páganos (Laguardia) at 525 meters above sea level and is worked biodynamically (but not certified). The hand-destemmed grapes fermented in small 2,500-liter oak vats with yeasts selected from their vineyards and matured in new French oak barrels for 16 months. It's surprising how integrated the oak is, considering the new barrels, but the wine has such an intensity that it can take the oak and still come thorough as perfumed, elegant and nuanced, open and expressive. It comes in at 14.5% alcohol, with a pH of 3.7 and 5.88 grams of acidity and super fine tannins. This is often my favorite wine from the Eguren family, and this is a year of finesse and elegance. 5,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2025.

From vines planted in 1975 in Páganos and farmed in dry conditions, the 2023 La Nieta was aged 16 months in new French oak barrels. The vineyard handles the vintage well, bringing delicate yet intense red fruit, balsamic touches, and subtle aging notes to the nose. On the palate, it is energetic, moving with agility despite its soft texture. Fine tannins and a hint of chalk deepen the finish. Precise and vibrant, La Nieta captures the finesse of Páganos with clarity and energy, ending long and beautifully defined.
